Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein was among scores of protesters arrested Saturday at Washington University in St. Louis as demonstrations and days-long encampments in opposition to Israel's war in Gaza sweep across the nation's college campuses.
Hundreds of protesters have been detained or arrested at more than a dozen schools from New York to California since a protest at Columbia University in New York City 10 days ago. Students are calling for a cease-fire and want their schools to stop investing in Israeli firms that are involved with or profit from Israel's war against Hamas. The protesters also want the U.S. to halt military aid to Israel's war effort.
Many school administrations have ordered the demonstrators removed. They cite ordinances prohibiting the encampments, infiltration of the encampments by people with no connection to their universities and antisemitic chants that make Jewish students feel unsafe on campuses. Student protest leaders insist the rallies have been peaceful.
Stein posted video on the social media site X of herself being taken into custody. The school's site contained videos and photos of Saturday's Greater St. Louis Marathon.

jill stein dined with putin, at a gala mike flynn set up. hamas is a terrorist group. putin is not for Democracy. I don't think hamas is either. Don't see pro-democracy outlook from orban, kim, other dictators. Old saying-a person is judged by the company they keep. I don't feel like qualifying that there might be a redeeming quality in any of the the people/groups I see as enemies of Democracy. Not seeing that right now.
Someone mentioned 1968 in relation to current protests. I remember the protests, the response to the protests, and that along with influencing public opinion about the war in Vietnam, also opened the door for nixon to get elected. That worked out great for everybody. I especially remember that nixon said he had a secret plan to get America out of Vietnam and he'd reveal it after the election in 1972. That was another great step for the U.S.
I hate the overkill response to the attack on Israel on Oct. 7, hate the gruesome punishment on civilians, see that the future will not improve for anyone in the middle east, probably ever. Before I take sides in these campus protests, I want to know what is fueling the action. If this is more rwnj agitation to try to swing the U.S. further right, I want to know that. If it is an honest emotional response to elemental right and wrong, I want to know that. Since I have friends in both countries, I will probably never voice a whole-hearted opinion one way or another.
