Republicans file lawsuit to block count of Nevada mail ballots received after Election Day

Source: AP

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Republican National Committee on Friday filed a federal lawsuit seeking to prevent Nevada from counting mail ballots received after Election Day, as the state's law currently permits.

The law, passed by Democrats in 2021, permits the tallying of mail ballots received up to four days after Election Day, provided the envelopes are postmarked before the end of the day. The lawsuit says the provision also assumes that envelopes received three days after Election Day that don't have a postmark indicating otherwise were posted in time.

Republicans contend this violates the U.S. Constitution's requirement that there be a single day for Election Day.

“Nevada’s ballot receipt deadline clearly violates federal law and undermines election integrity in the state," RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said in a statement. "Ballots received days after Election Day should not be counted."

Every business has it if your postmark is on or before the due date, it will count. So this runs against SWBTATTReg May 3 #1

every cutoff date that I know of. And tell me, how is a ballot not valid when in the old days, the Pony Express and other carriers delivered such mail to people (and picked it up too).

You can't trust the mail going through the post office to arrive within a "proper" time frame anymore. DeJoy killed an institution created by our constitution in favor of his over riding personal interests in for-profit mailing. The fact it helped Trump was an aside that opened many doors for him, I'm sure.

After the anthrax scare rules were put in place that all mail had to be processed through a machine that has the capability of capturing an image an image and storing that image. Every piece is put into a data base with it's image and metadata. This requires specially trained electronic technicians and operators to be on staff and requires daily maintenance. This is like when they were scrapping out old "sorting machines".. Not one press article would say what kind of sorting machines they were. I managed to find out from friends they were old, decrepit DCBS's. No small town Post Office is going to be able to get a DCBS and the crew to operate it. Besides, the automation is more cost effective and the trucks have to make the trip anyway. I'm not a fan of De Joy, but the criticisms like this are pointless. i think a lot of people don't realize how automated the USPS is. Whether it's a package or letter it is sorted by automation unless it is too large, too heavy heavy or is non machinable because it's shape like rounds.

although changes in how our mail travels has changed in the last year quite a bit.

It has gone from going to the larger city out of us to well south of that and then back up. We also have less frequent deliveries.

I end up hand delivering my ballots to the local courthouse out of caution.
