Poll: Public Will Blame Congressional GOP For ‘Fiscal Cliff’ Failures

Nearly half of Americans doubt that President Obama and Congress will strike a deal on the so-called "fiscal cliff" before the year-end deadline but a majority is prepared to blame Republicans on Capitol Hill for such a failure, a poll released Tuesday shows.
The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll shows that 49 percent of Americans do not think an agreement will be reached before January 1, 2013, when self-imposed automatic spending cuts and tax hikes are slated to take effect if a deal is not produced.
But the poll also shows that 53 percent believe that the congressional GOP will be more blameworthy if an agreement isn't ironed out, while 27 percent believe Obama will be more to blame. Twelve percent said that both sides should share the blame equally.

"Hugin and Munin fly each day over the spacious earth.
I fear for Hugin, that he come not back, yet more anxious am I for Munin."
I tell it like it is, baby.

(157 posts)raising taxes IF, and only IF, gas prices came back down to less than $1.75 gal, and all our neccessities (food, shelter, clothing)prices drop at least 25%, auto insurance premiums drop 50%, healthcare premiums drop 50%, so on and so on.
It's time to put the stress test on the 2% rich. They already put 98% of us thru the stress test...majority of us survived it.
I'm all for a CONSUMER STRIKE.

(45,274 posts)Every time prices have dropped for a while in the past, the market for gas hogs recovered and the pressure to build alternatives such as hybrids declined. I think I'd rather see an end to oil subsidies.
As for health care, let's go for a single payer system.
And on taxes, as long as the structure remains progressive, we can stand some increases. Maybe with a shift at the state level from sales taxes, which are rather regressive, to progressive income taxes.
As for a consumer strike, hell yes!

(157 posts)less than $1.75;
Last Spring on Meet the Press, the host was talking with our Secretary of Treasury. He asked him why gas prices are so high. Mr Geithner response was "we've had such a warm winter that the energy dept lost revenue, so we have to make it up somewhere." My jaw dropped, and I've been pissed every since. To top it off, a few weeks later the gas prices started dropping. Here in Florida the price dropped down to $3.05 gl. Then on our local news, the head of Florida's Dept of Transportation was complaining about the low price of gas, and he said the dept and State was losing money. He said if gas prices kept on dropping, they would have to raise the toll prices, AND start charging a yearly mileage on car tags!! Lo and behold, within a few days, the gas prices starting rising (within a month it shot up to $3.65gl), then they raised the tolls anyways (up by .50). I haven't heard anymore about the idea of charging a yearly mileage rate to vehicle tags yet.
Enough is enough!

(946 posts)Seriously, if no deal is struck, the GOP will firmly believe that American blames the President and Democrats for the problem. Right now, they believe they are negotiating in good faith and present acceptable ideas.
What will change in the end? Not a damn thing. After Jan 1 the Bush tax cuts will go away and we'll have to usher in the Obama tax cuts.

Congress is not the GOP's country club but that's what they think it is.

(6,486 posts)as tax cuts for the middle-class will absolutely happen in the new congress - but so much good can come out of going off the cliff bills the republican would never allow to occur if they had the chance....
Going off the fiscal cliff positives would be....
The best way to make the richest of rich pay a bit more fair share of taxes (Bush tax cuts would finally end).
A way to finally cut the huge bloated military industrial complex that republicans keep feeding as it grows and grows into a world wide imperialistic monster out of control.....
The best way to show the republicans that Democrats mean business and won't cave and that they won't be able to the same play games in February with the debt ceiling -
Republican won't be able to cut Medicare if we went off the cliff. because that what they have on the table and want to negotiate on.
The republicans in congress will overwhelmingly get the blame and rightfully so!
If Republicans don't fall in line with the will of the voters - Then let it ride of the cliff on January 1st!!!!!
