Sandy Hook families agree to Alex Jones' bankruptcy liquidation

Source: Reuters

June 7, 2024 5:37 PM EDT Updated 11 hours ago

NEW YORK, June 7 (Reuters) - Families of the Sandy Hook massacre victims claimed victory in Alex Jones' bankruptcy case on Friday, accepting the conspiracy theorist's proposal to sell his assets, including InfoWars, to partly pay legal judgments to them for his lies about the 2012 U.S. school shooting.

Jones, who filed for U.S. bankruptcy protection 17 months ago, has given up trying to reach a bankruptcy deal that would reduce the $1.5 billion that he owes to the relatives of 20 students and six staff members killed in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Instead, Jones decided this week to proceed with a court-supervised liquidation of his assets.

Chris Mattei, an attorney for the Sandy Hook families, said on Friday that Jones' pivot to a Chapter 7 liquidation was a moment of "meaningful accountability" for his repeated lies, pushing the broadcaster to the "brink of justice." "Alex Jones has hurt so many people," Mattei said. "The Connecticut families have fought for years to hold him responsible no matter the cost and at great personal peril."

Are we beginning to see the unraveling of a truly horrible period filled with beasts like Jones?

I'm sick and tired of the hate-filled, hate-mongering slime inhabiting public airwaves and bandwidth. I'd like to live to see all of them GONE.

Cheese Bro - he's now got two states suing him.

Anal Fistula lost in N.Y.C. But he still has D.C., Georgia and Florida.

Navarro? Due to be released soon.

I'm still waiting for Roger Stone's days in court.

...discharges the bankruptcy as full settlement to the Sandy Hook families.

Then in three months he becomes an employee (not an owner) of a brand new company, free from any legal/debt obligations to the families. The new company is privately held and controlled by shareholders. 100 shares are issued, Jones controls 98. The other two are controlled by two trusted money investors. Together, the three are the entire board of directors. They buy the IP, video catalog, website, logos, merchandise of the old company out of bankruptcy.

Up and running again in six months.

Considering that his assets are probably nowhere near the judgement amount, I doubt that whatever is liquidated will end up being all that they accept. I expect that a liquidation and final settlement (and there are probably other creditors out there beyond the Sandy Hook families that want their $$$ too), would stipulate that any future financial gains by him will need to have funds set aside towards satisfying that $1.5 billion.

I looked up non-dischargeable debt:
What Is Nondischargeable Debt? Nondischargeable debt is a type of debt that cannot be eliminated through a bankruptcy proceeding. Such debts include, but are not limited to, most student loans; most federal, state, and local taxes; money borrowed on a credit card to pay those taxes; and child support and alimony.
