Norquist lobbies Michigan lawmakers to pass right-to-work bill

Detroit News Lansing Bureau

Lansing — Influential anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist is urging Michigan lawmakers to pass a right-to-work law, calling it "absurd" to require workers in a unionized workplace to financially support labor unions.

Norquist, founder of Americans for Tax Reform, sent all legislators a letter Nov. 30, adding to the growing chorus of conservative groups pressuring the Republican-controlled Legislature to jam through a right-to-work bill in the lame duck session this month.

"This is one of the most important steps you can take to jumpstart the state's economy, boost employment, and spur population growth," Norquist wrote in a letter to legislators obtained by The Detroit News.

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce on Monday came off the sidelines and called for passage of the legislation, which could be introduced as early as Tuesday. Do the auto workers in Detroit have any sway over this legislature or not?

Is this religious belief system, giving all ownership to a few wealthy cronies?

Michigan is going faster than this road than Texas.

3. It's absurd NOT to require workers in a unionized workplace to support the union.

It's absurd to think you can pay back the national debt with only lowered-wages middle class workers.

It's absurd to think you can pay back the national debt without getting much of that payback from the rich who took most of what was borrowed. (And, then made more money off what they took.)

It's absurd to have such and absurd sounding person talking to our Michigan legislators.

6. Right to work TWO JOBS at twice the hours, and half the pay, no benefits

Wake up, get your share of the benefits of your labor, don't let it all go to the top; organize and make reasonable demands for a living wage. The people at the top can't get rich without your labor and work skills. A house is just lumber, wires and pipes; without your skills and trades, so don't let the guy that can't bang a nail straight, take all the profit of your labor.
