Citing 'media focus,' Gov. Scott's jobs czar resigns
For the third time in less than a year, Gov. Rick Scott will be seeking a new chief of the Department of Economic Opportunity.
Scott's $140,000-a-year jobs czar, Hunting Deutsch, abruptly resigned his post Tuesday in the midst of the governor's four-day trade mission in Bogota, Colombia.
The governor's office confirmed Deutsch's resignation.
In a two-page letter of resignation dated Dec. 4 and submitted to the governor, Deutsch wrote: "I find the current media focus on my personal matters a distraction to the Agency and your administration and believe it best for me to leave. I trust this will be sufficient transition time to develop a succession plan."
Deutsch, a former banking executive, drew controversy recently following revelations, first reported by The Florida Current news site, that he had collected state unemployment benefits between 2009 and 2011. He was hired in June to replace Doug Darling, who resigned in April. During the interim, DEO was run by the state's former top workforce executive, Cynthia Lorenzo.

(27,461 posts)and every week I had to swear that I was looking for work. Further, I maxed out at 50 weeks.
The Florida Current first reported Deutsch nearly maxed out on more than $25,000 in government benefits paid at the maximum of $275 per week over 91 weeks between 2009 and 2011 -- a period during which he and his wife took multiple trips abroad despite a state law requiring unemployment recipients to be available to work.
"At the end of the day, Im fortunate enough where Ive worked for very successful companies for a long period of time and luckily sold all my bank stocks -- most of them at the right time, at the right price -- and quite frankly, didnt have to work," Deutsch told the Current in early November. "So my wife and I took time off and traveled a good bit; we were in Europe several times."
