On Tuesday, July 23, at about 10:19 a.m., a localized hydrothermal explosion occurred near Sapphire Pool in Biscuit Basin, located just north of Old Faithful.
Biscuit Basin, including the parking lot and boardwalks, are temporarily closed for safety reasons. The Grand Loop Road remains open.
No injuries were reported and the extent of damage is unknown at this time.
Park staff and staff from USGS will monitor conditions and reopen the area once deemed safe.
No other monitoring data show changes in the Yellowstone region. Todays explosion does not reflect a change in the volcanic system, which remains at normal background levels of activity.
This is an evolving incident, and additional details will be shared as more facts are known.

As a former ranger for the area, I just would like to see what happened.

(97,315 posts)Said there were no injuries, it did make a mess out of part of the boardwalk. Stress assessments have to be made now, it's hard to tell where the crust is thin.

(3,213 posts)2 million, 1.3 million and 631,000 ago. The USGS doesn't think any eruption would be as severe as previously.

(3,511 posts)this type of explosion is not that rare
basically water underground flashed into steam causing the explosion. considering how how the rocks are just underground there its not unusual for water to suddenly seep into a "hot pocket" and explode. its just not common to catch it on video
this is from the usgs explaining it
