Michigan Senate OKs Bills Prohibiting Abortion Coverage By 'Obamacare' Health Exchange

Source: MLIVE

LANSING, MI - Health plans participating in Michigan's "Obamacare" health exchange could not cover elective abortions unless the coverage is offered as a separate optional rider purchased by women, under legislation that won approval mostly along party lines Thursday in the state Senate.

The passage of three bills came while union members packed the gallery's second floor to watch for a much-anticipated vote on right-to-work legislation announced in the morning. Democrats slowed up action on the abortion bills by asking that the bills be read in their entirety.

Majority Senate Republicans also passed a bill that would let health facilities assert as a matter of conscience an objection to participating health services. Providers would have to inform patients of other places to go.

Michigan is pursuing a joint federal-state "partnership" exchange under the federal Affordable Care Act. It will let people and businesses shop for and buy insurance on an online Travelocity-like website.

wouldn't it be better, if after an election, the winners were sworn in immediately, and the losers were escorted out the door. under the current system, the losers get to do alot of damage in the lame duck.

After the current session, Republicans will still own the house, senate, and governor's mansion. They are unstoppable. It's like a Newt Gingrich dream come true.

what a lot of people have said about the ACA - there are loopholes and exemptions big enough to drive a tank through. We knew this would be a problem when they allowed it as a compromise; it shouldn't come as a surprise that some states are going to take advantage of it.

I thought the biggest issue with Obamacare as it went through was the Senate's dismantling (I should say the GOP's systematic dismantling...) of the Single-payer option.... Really was disappointing that the real guts that should have been included were tore out to leave this frankenstein we have now.

On topic:

Makes me think twice about moving back to Michigan because I'll be forced to deal with extreme loads of stupid and arrogant conservative law makers who have no business making health declarations.

One of the provisions in Obamacare says that men and women will pay the same premium. He Michigan is saying that women must pay more. Is that even legal. Also, why are Michigan Republicans so deliberately alienating women? This just looks incredibly dumb on so many levels besides economically and politically. 2014 is shaping up as a wave election in Michigan.

It is gone. Evil has triumphed and I have no fight left in me. I am sure my union is dead and now poor women will be forced to give birth while the rich bitches will continue to get their discreet "D & C's". Despair.

Elections have consequences. MI voted for a motherfucker of a governor and TeaPuke lawmakers in 2010, so this is what you get. First, Dems there (and elsewhere) needed to stop the INSANE whining and bitching and needed to get the fuck to the polls. They didn't. So now this is what you get. See what happens? I bet all those Dems who bitched and whined about purity are REALLY bitching and whining now that they have Snyder aren't they? ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES. Buck up, learn that lesson, and organize and FIGHT for another day.

I didn't vote for ANY of them and how dare you tell me how to react to the destruction of my state? You don't know a fucking thing about me or how hard I have worked my entire adult life in the MEA. A lifetime of work is about to be dismantled and you have the arrogance to tell me how I should feel?

Fuck you.

I've been in a deep dark place since yesterday. I feel it in my body as much as my mind. A lot of people, including unfortunately people here, don't get what a kick in the gut this is. We need time to process this like any kind of grief. Those who would tell us what to feel or do right now are not our true allies, and are as inconsiderate as someone telling a person whose house has burned to grab and hammer and get to work. We will fight, DU. At the moment we need to catch our breath.

evil bastards drag us back to 1929. I may have overreacted, but that post was so snotty, mean-spirited, judgmental, and so presumptuous that I thought it was written by a bagger troll. I am in the exact same place you are and I need to grieve for my state. We will dust ourselves and fight back, but I am just not quite there yet.

Thanks again. We will get through this too, but damn...
