Obama visiting Michigan plant to push tax plans

Source: AP

The Associated Press

Posted December 6, 2012 at 5:36 p.m.

REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The White House says President Barack Obama will visit a suburban Detroit auto plant Monday afternoon, a visit an aide says is to part of an effort to make the case for raising tax rates on wealthier Americans.

A presidential statement Thursday says Obama will participate in "an event on the economy" at the Daimler Detroit Diesel plant in Wayne County's Redford Township.

An administration official said earlier that the Michigan trip is part of Obama's effort to get public backing for his positions and use that support to pressure Republicans to reach a deal on the "fiscal cliff."

The official requested anonymity in order to discuss the trip before it was publicly announced.

Looks like the Koch brothers own another state. I want my president to speak out, and I mean no holds barred, about this.

I'm a little confused by this. The idea that an employee would have the freedom to either join a union or not join a union...and therefore to pay union dues or not pay union dues...seems perfectly reasonable to me.

But I'm sure that argument dramatically oversimplifies things. What am I missing about the harm this law will do?

8. It busts up the union's solidarity.

Some would work at a job, expecting the wage and benefit packages that were hard-won by union activity. It's legilation to bust the unions.

9. Does it do that automatically?

I would think that we wouldn't want anyone....an employer or a union....to force an individual to be in a union or to not be in a union. I mean, it busts up the union's solidarity of the workers make their own choice to leave the union, but the law doesn't force them to do so, does it?

I get your point that those people may benefit from the current wage and benefit packages...but if the union is weakened and people see that they've lost their leverage to bargain with their employer (so they lose some wages and benefits), they'd be equally free to join the union and pay dues again to strengthen it's ability to bargain for them.

Not trying to start an argument here. I've never been in a union so I don't get the context, but I think it would bother me to not be able to make my own choice on something like this.

10. One has the freedom of choice without such laws now.

That choice: go work in a non-union shop.

Notice also that Snyder didn't touch police or firefighters in this legislation? Why? there is no way he would have gotten the votes for passage. This is nothing more than a stab at the UAW, etc.

Let's be clear: When we undermine the power of unions, we undermine the conditions for all workers, union or non-union. Stats involving right-to-work states prove this out time and time again.

If I were O, I would bring whatever pressure he can, because Michigan is really the last stand for labor rights.

... it's illegal for them to strike (ignoring the occasional bout of "blue flu&quot . They are required to submit to arbitration in any union/management negotiation.

That, plus, the governor is driven to work by police

Why a union? I'm not an organizer, and not eloquent enough to really spell it out. But if my hourly wage was good, and my benefit package was good and my workplace was safe, it was because of the sacrifice of workers who came before me, striking for improvements from managers who always want to give less. The strike is the only real weapon workers have, and it is only effective if the whole workforce commits to it.

Solidarity Forever (1915):

When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run,
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun;
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one,
But the union makes us strong.
CHORUS:
Solidarity forever,
Solidarity forever,
Solidarity forever,
For the union makes us strong.
Is there aught we hold in common with the greedy parasite,
Who would lash us into serfdom and would crush us with his might?
Is there anything left to us but to organize and fight?
For the union makes us strong.
Chorus
It is we who plowed the prairies; built the cities where they trade;
Dug the mines and built the workshops, endless miles of railroad laid;
Now we stand outcast and starving midst the wonders we have made;
But the union makes us strong.
Chorus
All the world that's owned by idle drones is ours and ours alone.
We have laid the wide foundations; built it skyward stone by stone.
It is ours, not to slave in, but to master and to own.
While the union makes us strong.
Chorus
They have taken untold millions that they never toiled to earn,
But without our brain and muscle not a single wheel can turn.
We can break their haughty power, gain our freedom when we learn
That the union makes us strong.
Chorus
In our hands is placed a power greater than their hoarded gold,
Greater than the might of armies, magnified a thousand-fold.
We can bring to birth a new world from the ashes of the old
For the union makes us strong.

11. The unions created the prevalent working conditions over the years

with dues, strikes and most of all backing lawmakers who are worker friendly and to continue that, they need paying members.
What is going on is, big business is trying to DE FUND unions because that is the main revenue stream to fight against them.
Kill the unions, is their real goal, to strip workers right, to fair wages, working conditions, safety and hazardous environmental and health. issues. The active union worker is asked to give free ride to non dues paying members who are not the ones who sacrificed and funded the unions to fight the political fight for them. Unions are for treating every worker fairly and workers should all participate in insuring the union is treated equitably by every worker. Don't be penny wise and pound foolish, don't unilaterally disarm, just when the fight is beginning. The solution is more unions, not less, thirty years of middle class decline proves it.

... allows any employer to fire you at any time, for any reason. Wearing mis-matched socks today? You're fired. Tough shit.

... allows any employer to 'reorganize', 'retitle' and cap wages for any reason. Stellar performance review? Doesn't matter - we don't think you need a raise this year. Or next, for that matter.

Without union power, companies can run their employees into the ground and the employee has no recourse. Indiana's Right to Work & companies here are downright hostile to their employees, in alot of cases - they don't care, there's a huge market of folks desperate for work.
