China asks army to be ready for regional war
Source: Hindustan Times
China said it was normal for its marine surveillance aircraft to fly over the disputed Diaoyu islands after Japan scrambled fighter jets to intercept the Chinese aircraft early on Thursday.
Within hours of the incident, Communist Party of China (CPC) general secretary was quoted by the state media as ordering the largest armed forces in the world, Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) to be ready to win regional wars.
China and Japan are locked in a dispute over the ownership of the Diaoyu (which the Japanese call Senkaku) islands in the East China Sea but it was for the first time that aircraft from both countries were involved in the row.
Thursday also marked the 75th anniversary of the beginning of an episode known as the Nanjing Massacre, when the Japanese Imperial Army troops entered Nanjing, the then-Chinese capital and triggered large-scale violence.

And then it starts - possible of a shooting war between Japan and PRC, over some Iceland's both of them claim for them self - and who would possible drag in other parts into the fury... PRC have been following a aggressive policy the last couple of years - and now they want to play ball with Japan - over the icelands...
And then you have the 75th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre where the Japan Imperial army entered Nanjing and was killing indiscriminately civilians foot over hand.. The Nanjing massacre is known for one of the largerst violence against the chinese people in the 1930s - (not that Japan did it worst other places too, but the Nanjing massacre is known as one of the worst) And is still something chinese tend to not forgetting.. And the will to play into nationalistic feelings when things are not going that good in PRC is not new - even if the public numbers is great in PRC - I think they know if they are not carefully, it could be a nasty belly landing when PRC goes into the same recession the rest of the world have discovered... And all this war mongering is nothing more than trying to make the new leadership all powerfully - and to show the chinese people who are in sharge...
But for some reasons I have the feeling if PRC is really to Chance anything with Japan over the Iceland's, they might be in for a surprise - as Japan have a decent "self-defense naval force" who is capable of making a lot of danger to the PRC naval forces.. And Japan have also alliances with the United States I suspect PRC should keep an eye on - as an attack on Japan might get USA into the furry - a furry I doubt PRC would hope to be in anytime soon.. PRC maybe believe they could play aircraft carrier game with the US - I suspect if they do, they will loose, both their aircraft carrier and a lot of pride in the prosess.... After all, the PRC is just staring on the game - the US have more than 70 year of knowledge about aircraft carriers - and a lot of more resources to boot...
I hope PRC are not looking for a shooting war - with Japan or other nations.. Hopefully this most for internal consumptions - but they might be looked into believing that PRC can stand their ground - even against the United States - as they have playing a aggressive politic game against their nabours - and also against the united states for some years now... They even plan to close up most of the South Chinese Sea from the united states - and Japan just happening to be in that area, where Chinese want to be the biggest player in the game..

Hopefully this is just hot air - but when it comes to China - it is not what they say who is important - it is more what they do not say, who is important to look at... And China have been ubiquitous about what they want to grab in the south china sea.... They put forward a lot of smoke and mirrors - but what we have to look at, is what is happening behind the smoke and mirrors - and to try to understand what is happening inside the hall of powers in PRC.. I suspect most of this is smoke and mirrors - to show off how mighty the PRC army, navy and the air force have been the last couple of years - but it is also a sign about the willingness - and ability the PRC have to try to force their way on others in the area they want to have the last say on... PRC is maybe also using this smoke and mirror to fight off a lot of political discontent inside PRC.. It is a lot of political turbulence ahead for the government in Beijing - and PRC is not that stable and secure as the outgoing government want to show to the world... PRC is still in many ways a backward country - who also is poor even by chinese standards - PRC have more than 800 million farmers, who have never been anywhere near the riches of the great city's at the shores of the country.. It is a extreme difference between the shining City's at the coastal areas - and the dirt poor countryside where more than half of the population is still living in... And the corruption is rampant in the Communist party - where local leaders is known to play ball with private enterprises, to take land from farmers - and tear down homes to make space to apartments or business, and many of them who lost their homes, are not given some property elsewhere... Rather the opposite have happened many times - where corrupt officials and big business have stolen land, property and even murdered people who was standing in their way... 800 millions are given "their" share of the wealth from what has happening in PRC for the last 25 years - that make for some really nasty discomfort in the population..
And then we have the ugly head of nationalism - who have been used by the government in PRC many times the last couple of years, to shore up support for the government - and where forreign property or industry have been burned to the ground, or luted for valuabes.. Of course the government claim they was not behind it - but in a tight controlled country like PRC, you are not allowed to go outside of the box, if the government are not giving you the clear to do it.. And PRC is pretty sure about what happened in 1989 was not to happend again... So next time pepole goes on "rampage" to revenge "insult to the Chinese Nation" you better look about what the PRC government are not doing, rather than what they are doing...

(5,725 posts)I can think of a couple of reasons.
A. The island is lightly defended so is a good testing grounds for invasion techniques that may, eventually, be used on Taiwan.
B. Determine the resolve of the rest of the world to counter such an aggresive action.

(5,455 posts)The Chinese military does not have the capability to invade Japan and any attack on Japan with conventional forces are going to result in extremely heavy Chinese losses.
Historically the Japanese military has always fought extremely well and their front line equipment today is among the best in the world, especially their Navy and Air Force.
