D-Day veterans return to Normandy to mark 81st anniversary

COLLEVILLE-SUR-MER, France (AP) — Veterans gathered Friday in Normandy to mark the 81st anniversary of the D-Day landings — a pivotal moment of World War II that eventually led to the collapse of Adolf Hitler’s regime.

Along the coastline and near the D-Day landing beaches, tens of thousands of onlookers attended the commemorations, which included parachute jumps, flyovers, remembrance ceremonies, parades, and historical reenactments.

Many were there to cheer the ever-dwindling number of surviving veterans in their late 90s and older. All remembered the thousands who died.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth commemorated the anniversary of the D-Day landings, in which American soldiers played a leading role, with veterans at the American Cemetery overlooking the shore in the village of Colleville-sur-Mer.

The comment shocked the Chancellor. First the Chancellor wanted to agree with his host, then Merz realizing that he/Merz is no nazi, corrects Trump.

he was one of those that was a part of D-Day. In his own way he was a great man . Can't imagine how he would feel if he were alive today.

What a truly courageous act they performed.

that a similar ceremony by NATO vets don't do a similar remembrance on the shores of long island or Virginia or Florida 80 years from now.

hyperbole, maybe, but really, is it all that far fetched?

From President Biden's speech when he and the First Lady attended the D-Day commemoration in Normandy.

He talks to each elderly veteran personally, and their faces lighting up brings tears.

They were always around until those veterans passed.
Now, I can't find a poppy for Memorial Day or Veterans Day.
Pity.

Thank you to the brave warriors and selfless Americans who risked everything back on June 6, 1944 to fight the Nazis.
