Freezing rain causes 21-vehicle pileup in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma highway officials have re-opened Interstate 40 in downtown Oklahoma City after a 21-vehicle pileup at its intersection with Interstate 35.

The two cross-country interstates meet near downtown Oklahoma City. Freezing rain in advance of a snowstorm slickened the highway overnight, and a semi-trailer jackknifed on a bridge over the Oklahoma River.

4. No one can drive safely on ice.

Everything slides. I used to have a jeep Wrangler that would go great in any kind of snow. It was terrible on ice. Any little incline in the road and it would slide right off the road.

I hate ice worse than anything.

5. Once while walking on icy Mount Roberts, behind Juneau, Ak., I

lost my footing on the ice, fell on my butt, and slid (in slow motion) for nearly 20 yards trying to grasp anything that might stop me. I could not get a grip on anything and kept sliding down a shallow slope toward Gold Creek. After what seemed like a quarter of an hour, I came to rest behind some boulders that lined the creek bed. By that time I was laughing hysterically which made getting to my feet nearly impossible.
Your comment about how a small incline would cause your Wrangler to slide reminded me of this silly incident.

6. I was standing still one time and fell flat.

Another time I was getting in my car in my driveway and one leg went one way and the rest of me went the other way. I snapped a ligament in my knee. I had to wear a brace for six weeks.

Be careful out there if you have ice.

7. Ice that far into the south must be rare

The weather is getting more funky by the year. If something isn't done soon it's only going to get worse.

In Seoul South Korea the weather is a balmy 12 degrees F.

8. No, it's not that rare,

and Oklahoma isn't far south at all. Where I live (Houston) is fairly south, and yet we had an ice storm a couple of years ago that caused 800 accidents in one day. (The accidents probably wouldn't have been so numerous if the media had bothered to tell people to stay off the bridges and overpasses...)

North Texas (think Dallas/Fort Worth) and Oklahoma get that kind of weather without question. Gulf Coast cities, not so much.

I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it in the snow and ice.
