Democratic Lawmaker In Awe Over GOP Colleagues: 'What's Wrong With You People?'

Speaking on the House floor, Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) tore into his colleagues on the other side of the aisle, frustrated with their apparent willingness to shepherd a version of President Donald Trumps so-called Big Beautiful Bill into law.
I say to my Republican colleagues: Whats wrong with you people? McGovern said Wednesday during a period of debate on the massive piece of legislation.
As ranking member of the House Rules Committee, McGovern oversaw his partys speaking time on the floor. The Democrats used it to hammer home the impact the bill would have on essential government benefits, with big cuts to the SNAP food assistance program and Medicaid.
In this bill, you provide a $2 billion tax break for gun silencers, but you cut SNAP benefits for vulnerable families, which, by the way, is on average $2 per person, per meal, McGovern went on, raising his arms for emphasis. Jesus Christ, what are you people thinking? he added.

(156,466 posts)and watch some of his facial expressions while he is tearing the GOP a new one, I think that was the gist (although I suppose "disbelief" could be another characterization, but feigned, knowing he knows they are a cult).

(20,936 posts)whose governments continue to serve the people with universal health care, no deadly gun culture, etc., must also be wondering what those people are thinking. $2 billion tax break for gun silencers while taking away food assistance and health care from millions? Really? I don't know if there is anything other countries could do about the depravity.

(11,479 posts)to the destruction of America. Small court battles here and there yes, but does it STOP what is happening? The unraveling of a nation is happening at breathtaking speed and Dems are clueless how to stop it. Its going to take blood, a whole lot of blood in the streets my friends to start to turn this back to the light. Counting on elections that may not happen is foolish IMO, strong statements on the floor of Congress are meaningless.
Done with rant, Im too frustrated to continue.

(156,466 posts)It has nothing to do with being "clueless". It has to do with the way this fucking "system of government" was originally created and generally maintained for almost 250 years, and how obvious known loopholes are being used to upend it.
IOW as I have been ranting about the past year - this system is based on "the honor system". You break that "honor" as the GOP has done, and that is it.
I.e., if a court says "STOP", following the "honor system" means you accept that order and say "okay" (no matter how begrudgingly you do it). Yet this administration has tested the boundaries and ignored the orders - at least until the very last minute (so far).
You should know what the "next step" would be when you have this happen and no one wants to go to that dark place.

(3,303 posts)They are purposely gathering too much power, too fast. And I do not believe for a minute that they are going to relinquish that power through elections. They have way too much to lose if Democrats get majorities in either or both houses.
Trump and the GOP minions are also generally organized and armed to the teeth, while we are still hoping for some meaningful gun control. While we don't want to become drooling gun-humpers but we also have zero intimidation power and we constantly get treated as such.
We need to face the cold, hard reality that these treasonous fascists may need to be removed from power rather than voted out.

(1,439 posts)This bill will allow the creation of Trump's private army (ICE), supposedly for immigration control. I see this as a private army, a Gestapo in waiting if you will, untethered by the constitutional constraints placed on the military. Besides going after anyone they are told to go after, I expect to see them in most polling places next year, intimidating and suppressing voters. Their mandate...doing Trump's bidding with the assurance in the reality that they can act as they wish with impunity (pardons for all).
Another reason why the GOP is not concerned about their constituents. They cannot be a constituent if they cannot vote. Just another voice to be silenced. Another reason why Trump shouted 'You'll never have to worry about voting again'.
Don't forget to throw in a totally corrupt and complicit SCOTUS majority.
They all know exactly what they doing, and the media won't even touch it.

(49,433 posts)GOP values self above anyone else. So they will screw others without any hesitation to get some tax cuts. Meanwhile their constituents will lose their health care, jobs, workers, services, etc.
Taking money out of our economy causes recession. Tax cuts won't be trickling down.
