House passes tax and immigration bill, sending it to Trump's desk

Republicans on Thursday notched the first major legislative victory of President Donald Trump's second term, a mammoth tax and immigration agenda the GOP hopes will reshape the U.S. economy and unwind many of the Biden administration's accomplishments.
The House, in a 218 to 214 vote, passed Trump's so-called "One Big Beautiful Bill," a $3.4 trillion measure to extend tax cuts from Trump's first term and implement new campaign promises -- such as eliminating income taxes on tips and overtime wages -- while spending hundreds of billions of dollars on immigration enforcement and defense. It raises the country's borrowing cap by $5 trillion, staving off a debt default that the Treasury was weeks away from breaching.
The House's approval sends the bill to Trump's desk to be signed into law in time to beat a self-imposed July 4 deadline. The Senate passed its edition of the legislation Tuesday.
To offset the cost of the bill, the legislation cuts about $1 trillion from Medicaid, the federal health insurance program for low-income individuals and people with disabilities, and other health care programs. It reduces spending on anti-hunger programs, including SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program formerly known as food stamps, by $185 billion.

(42,052 posts)Republicans and right-wingers. The former are Bill and Betty Null of Ottumwa, Iowa. They watch only locsl news at 5 p.m. and Big Three news at 5:30 before switching to "Wheel of Fortune," their favorite show of all time. Bill has political opinions, but they're rather meek, and he never discusses them with anyone but Betty once in awhile. Betty just says "Uh-huh" without looking up from her knitting. They might vote, but Tuesdays have been their canasta nights for 17 years, and Betty always takes hotdish and a Jell-O mold, so thete might not be time.
Right-wingers, otoh, are the most vile, despicable creatures ever produced in the universe. You've probably heard of some of them. Everybody hates them except other right-wingers, and Bill and Betty Null of Ottumwa, Iowa, who aren't familiar with them.

They are all the same. Your metaphorical Bill and Betty are pure evil and I hate them with every fiber in my being. I truly hope every miserable thing they have inflicted on the vulnerable and disenfranchised are visited apon them ten fold.

work overtime. That kept the company from hiring more people. The last few years I worked
we were being told on Friday how many days we would have to work over the next week.
Now the vast majority of employees will accept working 60 hours or more work schedules with few complaints. There will be much less opposition to working more hours and basically eliminating the 40 hour work week.

Any party that would have, as their candidate, the man responsible for the first ever attack on our Capital and any country that would vote for such a completely flawed, sociopathic, wholly unqualified human being as the President, deserves what they get.
I didn't vote for Trump, and I know no one on this forum did, but enough did vote for Trump that our country re-elected the worst person on the planet to lead this country.
We have no government, just the illusion of one. An illusion that is evaporating every day.
