NC governor vetoes anti-DEI, transgender rights bills

Source: The Hill

North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein (D) on Thursday vetoed three bills targeting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the state government, as well as a measure that takes aim at transgender rights.

With the anti-DEI bills — Senate Bill 227, Senate Bill 558 and House Bill 171 — the GOP-led state legislature sought to eliminate what it called “discriminatory practices” in public education with threats to cut funding and to prevent local and state government agencies from promoting or maintaining DEI programs or policies.

Stein, in his veto messages, said the bills were “riddled with vague definitions.” “Our diversity is our strength. We should not whitewash history, ban books, or treat our teachers with distrust and disdain,” he wrote in one veto. “Rather than fearing differing viewpoints and cracking down on free speech, we should ensure our students can learn from diverse perspectives and form their own opinions.”

In another, the first-term governor suggested the legislation would “make it harder” for the state to provide high quality services to its residents. “My administration is focused on building the strongest team possible by hiring and supporting the best employees. We cannot recruit and retain them without creating a welcoming work environment,” Stein wrote. “We make our most effective decisions when there is a diverse set of perspectives around the table.”

Thankfully the NC state legislature has one chamber that is just short of being able to override (assuming all (D)s vote against doing such).

Such legislation of hate promoted by Republicans needs to be opposed at every opportunity.

While the NC House Repukes are short one vote for veto overrides, there is a representative from the Greensboro area who, it is feared, might throw his constituents under the bus and switch parties. There’s been some noise made about that and the reporting I’ve see says that he’d do so in order to get the Repukes’ endorsement for one of the Council of State positions in the next election. 🤬

He would be an instant target for defeat in 2026, when he'd be up for re-election. These days, that's called "pulling a Tricia" (Cotham, the traitor from Charlotte). But unlike Tricia, he couldn't get the Repubs to gerrymander him a district in time to win in his new Party...

Tricia “Traitor” Cotham is what my son calls her. When the news broke about former Speaker Tim Moore having an affair with I-forget-who, I remember that there was a story on WUNC about Traitor also having had an affair with him. And that kinda explains her party switch and subsequent rejiggering of her district so she wouldn’t lose her seat (from Blue to one far friendlier).

NOTE: I am neither labeling, nor shaming nor indulging in any kind of double standard wrt anyone’s sexual conduct: What people do behind closed doors is none of my concern. What I am judging is screwing over the people of her district, and the entire state, by allowing the Christofascists to override the actual wishes and shove their beliefs on the majority of NC’s population. That being said…and I am judging here: Tim Moore is a reprehensible SOB.
