High-Capacity Magazines Bill To Be Introduced By Democrats On First Day Of Congressional Session

House Democrats will introduce legislation to ban the production of high-capacity magazines on the first day of the next congressional session, the office of Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), one of the lawmakers sponsoring the bill, told The Huffington Post.

The Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act will mirror a failed bill introduced during the 112th Congress. Its authors hope that in the wake of the shooting deaths of 20 first grade students in Newtown, Conn., there will be heightened political urgency to act when it is reintroduced on Jan. 3.

Backed by DeGette and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), the legislation has gained a wave of Democratic co-sponsors since the shooting, which also claimed the lives of 7 adults. But few Republicans have come forward to offer their support. Even more critical to the bill's political prospects, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has not indicated whether he will allow it to come to the floor for a vote.

Still, backers are hopeful, noting that a ban on high-capacity magazines -- which have been involved in many of the recent high-profile instances of mass gun violence -- would be a smaller concession for gun-rights advocates than a broader assault weapons ban.

6. Even if it is brought up in the House, the GOP will vote it down

We don't have the votes to overright them; they control the House.

All we can hope for is that their votes can be used against them in the future to get more Democrats voted into the House.

First, will Boehner put it up?

Second, you are right that even if EVERY democrat voted for something in the House, it is going to be hard to find the 20 or so republican's to get a simple majority in the House.

FURTHER, you will NOT get all the House democrats to sign on to ANY bill that limits in ANY WAY firearm possession in ANY way.

It is a LONG time until 2014, and any democrat in a close, dead split or Repubican leaning district knows FULL well that by then the moment for this will have passed, and he or she WILL get beat over the head by 30 second tv and radio ads screaming about he or she ATTACKING GUN RIGHTS!

I think a conservative estimate on house democrats who would not touch ANY firearm legislation is 25 at least.

That means you have to find at least 50 republicans, 50 HOUSE republicans, who will vote for it.

These jackasses could not even pass their own BS, political showcase "Plan B" bill in the face of the FISCAL CLIFF hype.

Boehner could put it up and it has about a 1% chance of passing. But, I question if he will put it up because while republicans will scream, but SOME DEMOCRATS did not vote for it, so it is not OUR FAULT, it still will lay at their feet that it won't pass. So, he will get a lot of blowback not just by the House Clown Posse for allowing them to embarass themselves, but also establishment Rs.

I just don't get why people can't get just how bad this House of Representatives is. It is clear as day to me, but it seems lost on the "liberal media" types and even a lot of democrats.

if a ban was put in place on production and presumably sale too? Buy it all back?

without necessarily any effect on imports assuming they are made elsewhere ?

I ask such questions because being UK the subject in general is of no consequence here given that it is illegal to be in possession of any form of live ammunition other than the limited amount allowed to those holding firearms licenses.
