Secretary of State Clinton hospitalized with blood clot: spokesman

Sun Dec 30, 2012 8:21pm EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was sent to the hospital on Sunday with a blood clot stemming from a concussion she suffered earlier this month and was being assessed by doctors, a State Department spokesman said.

"In the course of a follow-up exam today, Secretary Clinton's doctors discovered a blood clot had formed, stemming from the concussion she sustained several weeks ago," spokesman Philippe Reines said in a statement.

"She is being treated with anti-coagulants and is at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital so that they can monitor the medication over the next 48 hours," Reines said, adding that doctors would continue to assess her condition.

"They will determine if any further action is required," he said.

The article didn't say where the clot was. Could be in a leg from inactivity while recovering from flu/concussion. Or could be it is a result of lowered immunity, poor health in general. In any case, it is clear that Hillary Clinton is not faking anything about being ill and Republicans who suggested otherwise should apologize.

In hindsight, might have been a good move to truck her over there. Background:

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/12/hillary-clinton-faints-suffers-concussion/

“She has been recovering at home and will continue to be monitored regularly by her doctors,” Deputy Assistant Secretary Philippe Reines said. “At their recommendation, she will continue to work from home next week, staying in regular contact with Department and other officials. She is looking forward to being back in the office soon.”
No ambulance was called and she was not hospitalized, according to a state department official.

Wounded. Captured. Bet a few others have been dehydrated and woozy too. The concussion's unfortunate but clearly will be fine, and the clot could be either indication of something chronic or a one-off of the concussion. I predict the latter. If she had a disorder it would have shown up before now.

The story says the doctors "discovered" the clot. A stroke is an entirely different thing -- a burst blood vessel in the brain. Those aren't "discovered" until after they occur. I suppose one could "discover" an aneurysm in the brain on something like a CT scan before it burst and became a stroke, but that's not what's going on here.

Dec 2012

A stroke refers to impaired blood flow and oxygenation to the brain, be it from a clot (blood, cholesterol plaque, etc.) or a hemorrhage.

I'm curious where this clot is. If it's in her head, it's fairly serious. Though, given they administering anticoagulants, I suspect the clot is in her leg.

42. No, but it could cause a stroke, that's why they're pumping her with anticoagulants.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/30/politics/hillary-clinton-hospitalized/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Unfortunately, the anticoagulants can also cause a stroke--the kind of stroke caused by bleeding into the brain as opposed to a blood clot that stops blood flow. My mom had a blood clot in her lung. They put her on massive anticoagulants. Within 24 hours she suffered a bleeding into her brain type stroke. Within 6 weeks, she was gone.

I hope and pray Hillary gets through this. It is a really scary situation.

When she fell she suffered a concussion.

I had a fall a few years ago. Falling is quite common for people over 60.

I wish that preventive medicine would spend some time studying how to deal with and prevent falls. It would be worthwhile since broken hips are a big slice of our Medicare costs.

And the quality of life for many older people would be improved so much.

Falling is especially common in the snow and ice and winter flu months.

I wish all the best to Hillary Clinton. She has worked so hard as Secretary of State -- and accomplished so much.

He had a bad fall against a night stand, had a CT scan that showed he was okay, resumed normal activities including piloting his own plane, later showed symptoms, and a new CT scan showed a subdural hematoma. Surgery. Now recovering. Scared the crap out of his wife, as you might imagine.

My prayers for Hillary Clinton's full recovery.

They don't mention the location of the clot. I just asked a friend who has been a nurse for more than 30 years and she said that the clot doesn't necessarily have to be in the brain, that it can appear anywhere in the body.

My thoughts and prayers are with Hillary and also with Bill and Chelsea.

69. Dec 20th: Fox's Evening Shows Mock Hillary Clinton's Concussion

December 20, 2012
Fox's Evening Shows Mock Hillary Clinton's Concussion

Nearly all of Fox News' evening news shows ridiculed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for having to postpone her testimony on the Benghazi attack because of a concussion she suffered after fainting due to dehydration. Their mockery was an attempt to downplay the concussion and suggest Clinton was faking injury to avoid giving testimony, a notion the State Department has called "wild speculation based on no information."

The Washington Post reported on December 15 that Clinton sustained a concussion after she fainted due to dehydration while at home a week prior. After the incident, the State Department explained that Clinton would have to postpone her testimony about the attack on Benghazi due to the concussion.

Following the State Department's announcement, Fox News contributor John Bolton, appearing on On The Record, suggested Clinton was faking "diplomatic illness" to avoid testifying about Benghazi. The State Department's Victoria Nuland lashed out at Bolton for his remarks, labeling them "wild speculation based on no information."

Now Fox News' evening shows have decided to join Bolton in accusing Clinton of faking her condition and make it seem she is trying to avoid giving her testimony. Co-host of Fox News' The Five, Kimberly Guilfoyle, accused Clinton of running "a duck and cover" after suffering the concussion. Co-host Greg Gutfeld went on to ask, "How can she get a concussion when she has been ducking everything related to Benghazi?"

It certainly could be. I just mean that I don't think that if her first priority was running in '16 she'd have been saying how tired she is, etc. I guess since I'm just two years younger than she is, what I'm hearing when she says that sort of thing is that she's not feeling up to her life as it is now. I'm just a bookkeeper and I can relate to that. We don't all age the same way. I'm just hoping that she recovers quickly and gets to do whatever she wants for a long time, whether that's running for President or retiring.

Sun Dec 30, 2012, 10:54 PM
Dec 2012

I've had 3, take blood thinners every day, have my blood tested once a month. They hurt like hell but do not require hospitalization now. (In 1996 the treatment was to put you in the hospital for 5-7 days. I was there over Christmas that year. Now you just give yourself shots at home.)

If it is in your lungs, it is more dangerous. If its in your head, they usually say you had a stroke. I'm tempted to think it is in her leg and they are extra cautious. Some people are susceptible to them, others can get them from long plane flights, after surgery, or being inactive, like when recuperating from the flu and a concussion. That's my guess.

Obama needs to get Kerry confirmed ASAP so Clinton can have the time off to recover.

I also hope this starts blunting the talk that started the day after the election that she would (or should) run. Her husband found out in 2004 how important maintaining his health was. Secretary Clinton needs to do the same.

My wife is in medicine and did not react well when I read the NYTimes alert that came across my phone announcing this. Epidural or subdural, hemotomas are not good. She pointed to actress Natasha Richardson who fell while skiing, had a subsequent headache, sent the ambulance away, since it was "nothing" and died shortly after. Wife also lost her mom in this manner in the late '70's. Fell at home, was hospitalized for internal bleeding and they missed the clot. She died a few days prior to Christmas. Wife described a surreal holiday, opening gifts, bought, wrapped and addressed by now deceased mom.

She's very worried, as am I. Not trying to be a downer, just hoping she's receiving the best, state of the art care possible.

Prayers, vibes, positive thoughts, all going to Ms. Clinton.

And, I hope people like John Bolton feel like total asses. He was going totally apoplectic with his bushy mustache, stating nothing was wrong, just diplomatic illness to delay testifying. Ass!
