Canadians pull Reagan advertisement after furious Trump halts trade talks

Source: Al Jazeera

The Canadian province of Ontario has said it will pull an anti-tariff advertisement featuring former United States President Ronald Reagan’s voice, which prompted current US leader Donald Trump to scrap all trade talks with Canada.

Trump announced on his Truth Social network on Thursday that he had “terminated” all negotiations with Canada over what he called the “fake” advertising campaign that he said misrepresented fellow Republican President Reagan.

Less than 24 hours later, Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford said he was suspending the advertisement after talking to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney about the spiralling row with Washington.

“In speaking with Prime Minister Carney, Ontario will pause its US advertising campaign effective Monday so that trade talks can resume,” Ford said in a post on X.

1) Paused only. Not stopped.

2) Not immediate. Will run in the next World Series game at least and also other venues until Monday.

Why did Donald Trump really scrap trade talks with Canada?

On Thursday — mere hours before Trump cancelled the talks — Ottawa hit General Motors and Stellantis with tariffs in retaliation for reducing vehicle production in Canada.

Citing a source close to both the Canadian and U.S. governments, the Globe and Mail reported Friday that Canada's position on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and its consideration of China as a strategic partner also factored into Trump's move

In his social media posts slamming the Ontario ad, Trump drops a not-so-subtle hint of his own about something else that's really on his mind. “Canada is trying to illegally influence the United States Supreme Court in one of the most important rulings in the history of our Country," Trump said in a Friday morning post about the ad.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in November. If Trump loses, the tariffs he slapped on Canada and Mexico over fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration would be quashed, along with what he likes to call his "Liberation Day" tariffs.
