Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday accused the Trump administration of “rigging the election” by dispatching federal poll monitors to five California counties, as voters cast ballots on Newsom’s Proposition 50 redistricting measure.

The Department of Justice announced Friday that it would deploy personnel to polling sites in Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties to “ensure transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law,” ahead of the state’s Nov. 4 special election.

In an interview with KQED’s Political Breakdown, Newsom said the move was a “setup” for the Trump administration to cast doubt on the potential victory of Proposition 50 — a plan to redraw the state’s congressional district lines to advantage Democrats.

“They are creating the pretext that after we’re successful with Prop. 50, after there is a Democratic governor in New Jersey — and will be one in Virginia, unquestionably — that they can suggest somehow these were fraudulent, these elections were rigged against them,” Newsom said. “This is a preview of 2026. Wake up, everybody.”

23. when i was a poll watcher i had to have my name submitted..and i

think its still that way. For every poll watcher, our side can have one as well. Im so glad my state is all mail in. I was a poll watcher for mail in votes and it was booooring. I sat in a chair next to a repug and we just sat and watched the ballots go thru the machines and once inna while a ballot would be pulled to check with signature and of course the repug lept out of their chair and ran to see what the issue was.

Secrets ballots can be rigged in dozens of ways.

Are the trump cosplay goons going to go to the mail boxes and intimidate? Punish the goons and bypass the secret ballots that can be rigged. Everything is getting shuffled off to regional sorting centers, where it will sit until convenient for sorting and delivery. Of course DeJoy had a bunch of new million-dollar sorting machines junked, and so on.

Date stamps get smeared into illegibility, but someone at DU said you could ask for hand-stamping and take a picture.

I’m lucky to live within a few miles of county government buildings, and they have drop boxes — a series of drop boxes, actually, because some are for payment of county taxes, and everything gets changed out as needed.

When Benjamin Franklin invented the post office, it was never supposed to make a profit. It was a public service that was designed to pay for itself — and it always did, until deliberately wrecked by the GOP.
