Sen. Jim Justice (R-W.Va.) on Monday agreed to pay more than $5 million in back taxes to settle a Department of Justice lawsuit stemming from nearly two decades ago.
The Justice Department filed suit against Justice early on Monday, saying that the West Virginia Republican has neglected or refused to make full payment of $5.16 million in debt that he and his wife owed in 2009. It was filed in the Southern District of West Virginia and at the request of the IRS. Later in the day, a separate filing showed that Justice and his wife agreed to pay back the total in full.
Justice won his seat in the upper chamber last year after serving as West Virginias governor since 2017. He is also the heir to Bluestone, a West Virginia coal company, and owns the Greenbriar Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
A Justice spokesperson declined to comment.

This Jim Justice tax thing has been kept out of the mainstream and bubbling under the surface for some time (I had seen some local WV story, I think about a Greenbriar problem, that ended up outside of LBN, in the past month or so)... until suddenly DOJ mysteriously "sued" him and his wife, and then they decided to settle.
Now replace "Jim Justice"'s name with "Adam Schiff"'s and imagine the media's hyperventilation and 24/7 coverage if the same set of circumstances occurred.

(8,477 posts)how much Justice made from stalling the tax payment for 16 years versus any interest applied and this eventual "settlement". Years ago when I was in the corporate world this was a standard strategy. Companies would fight the IRS for long periods before finally "settling" on an amount. So they might pay a small amount regarding their current tax year and then use the difference of what they should have paid to do other things. They just played numbers games and made sure that the numbers were always in their favor in the end.

(194,059 posts)I have a couple second hand accounts on this.
If you get a lawyer he counter sued and delays. Eventually he offers this - hell pay the full amount LESS his legal fees. The contractor ends up with much less than they should have and have legal fees.
