Trump says he might sue Fed Chair Jerome Powell for 'gross incompetence'

Source: Washington Post

December 29, 2025 at 5:26 p.m. EST

President Donald Trump on Monday said he might sue Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H. Powell for what the president called “gross incompetence,” injecting new tension into the already strained relationship between the White House and the independent central bank.

Speaking at a news conference beside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago, Trump said “the guy is just incompetent.” Trump first brought up the Fed’s multibillion-dollar renovation project, which at times has become a stand-in for Trump’s ongoing attacks on the Fed system.

“It’s gross incompetence against Powell,” Trump said, adding: “We’re going to probably bring a lawsuit against him.”

Trump threatened a “major lawsuit” against Powell over the summer, but he never followed through. It wasn’t clear what specific claims Trump was referring to Monday, or how or when a suit could be brought. The White House did not respond to a request for more information. The Fed declined to comment.

What a waste of a perfectly good education you big fat bag of excrement. You never would have been, never should have been allowed into our system of higher education you f*cking blowhard. You've never accomplished anything on your own except failure.
I would say you're a disgrace to your family's name but your father and grandfather beat you to it. I can't even call you guys pigs because pigs are capable of thinking and compassion.
You've never done an honest day's work in you life. Probably never had a blister, a splinter or a paper cut. That includes your failed Administration.
Powell is one of the few people that stands between you and our next economic collapse you brain dead assw*pe.
You managed to pick the worst of the worst, most incompetent, lazy, hateful, immoral, greedy, racist motherf*ckers so it doesn't matter that you sleep through important meetings because they're on autopilot. It doesn't matter that nobody can safely land the plane because they don't intend to.
But yeah, by all means, sue Powell for whatever made up sh*t you can think of.
I'm sure nobody will notice how you f*cked everybody over and how we're still waiting on the EPSTEIN FILES.

Fed Should Lower Rates If the Market Does Well, Trump Says, Bloomberg, 12/23/25

“I want my new Fed Chairman to lower Interest Rates if the Market is doing well, not destroy the Market for no reason whatsoever,” Trump said in a social media post Tuesday. “Anybody that disagrees with me will never be the Fed Chairman!”

“In the old days, when there was good news, the Market went up,” Trump wrote. “Nowadays, when there is good news, the Market goes down, because everybody thinks that Interest Rates will be immediately lifted to take care of ‘potential’ Inflation.
(bolding added)

Fact check about the last sentence: There have been no rate increases in 2025, instead there have been 3 rate cuts, beginning with the one 9/17.

And there have been 4 rate cuts in the latter half of 2024, including one that was 0.50% instead of the usual 0.25%.

There have been no rate increases since July 2023, 2 1/2 years ago

And the market has been hardly "destroyed" by "too late Jerome Powell" - the S&P 500 hit a new all-time-high December 24.

is just another example of the cowardly press.

There is one and only on explanation for Trump’s threat: Trump is an ignorant buffoon. We saw that clearly when Yrump - on a tour of buildings used by the Fed - was embarrassed all to hell when he accused Powell of cost overruns only to have Powell correct Trump’s math, all on camera .

The Post glosses over Trump’s fundamental ignorance and tries to make this into a simple policy disagreement.

... and he does it to break people that don't afford him unquestioning loyalty, which he, incidentally, never returns. He attacks those who defy his often ill-informed and/or malicious demands, and he never lets up. For Christ's sake, he still insists that The Central Park Five, who were completely exonerated, should be executed anyway, just because HE, Donald Trump, says so!
As he has tediously reminded us at every possible opportunity, NO ONE knows as much about anything as HE does. A total fabrication, yes, but if you lie big enough, and repeat it often enough, those of limited intellectual capacity are eager to believe it. They love the outrageous.
I wake up every morning hoping to read his obituary. Nothing yet, but I'm optimistic. And, despite the fact that we're only a year apart in age, I am determined to live long enough to piss on his grave. That's gonna be a LOOONG line!

His basis for the "lawsuit" is the renovation of the Fed's buildings which started in 2017 during HIS first administration after all kinds of approvals and oversight under the Fed chairman HE appointed--although he seems to forget that fact periodically.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-whines-person-appointed-powell-203301679.html

But, only the best people I suppose....

Further, unlike his One Big Stupid Ballroom, the "project is overseen by the members of the Board of Governors, all of whom are Senate-confirmed. It was first approved by the Board in 2017. It has been subject to annual budget approval by the Board since then.

The Board's independent Office of Inspector General (OIG) has had full access to the project information on costs, contracts, schedules, and expenditures and receives monthly reports on the construction program. The OIG conducted an audit in 2021 to assess the Board's process for planning and managing multiple renovation projects as well as procuring services under various renovation-related contracts."
https://www.federalreserve.gov/faqs/building-project-faqs.htm#:~:text=Who%20oversees%20the%20project?,by%20the%20Board%20since%20then.

And all of this is in service to taking over an independent Fed that--while I'm sure we have all had issues with their decisions in the past--performs a function based on data that he is in no way qualified to do.

"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." -- Bertrand Russell

Federal Reserve Chairman (2018–present)

President Donald Trump nominates Powell in November 2017.

Powell takes the oath of office, administered by Randal Quarles, as chair in February 2018.

Powell testifies before the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs in 2018.
On November 2, 2017, President Donald Trump nominated Powell to serve as the chairman of the Federal Reserve, replacing Janet Yellen at the helm of the central bank.[32] On December 5, the Senate Banking Committee approved Powell's nomination to be chair in a 22–1 vote, with Senator Elizabeth Warren casting the lone dissenting vote.[33] His nomination was confirmed by the Senate on January 23, 2018, by an 84–13 vote.[4][26] Powell assumed office as chair on February 5, 2018.[34]
