A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to facilitate the return of a man who was deported in violation of a court order, according to a ruling issued Wednesday.
Judge Jill N. Parrish of the U.S. District Court in Utah issued an order on December 22 instructing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) not to deport Federico Reyes Vasquez while the case was under review. The man, who argued that he was being held illegally by federal authorities, was deported the next day, "in direct violation of the court," Parrish wrote. Newsweek reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment via email.
Why It Matters
The ruling comes as the Trump administration continues aggressive deportation efforts. Several cases have been documented in which people have been removed from the United States despite pending court orders, prompting federal judges to intervene. Courts have increasingly ordered the government to return individuals who were deported by mistake.
What To Know
ICE later acknowledged in court documents that the agency had not seen the order before carrying out the removal. In filings with the court, ICE said it would work with Reyes Vasquezs attorneys to arrange his return to the United States if he chooses.
