City of Dallas to raze 600 Elsbeth this week, ending years of fighting over former Oswald apartment
Source: Dallas Morning News
Come weeks end, 600 Elsbeth will be no more. Finally.
Thats according to this mornings letter from city of Dallas Senior Assistant City Attorney Andrew Gilbert, who says the citys through messing around with the Oak Cliff apartment complex where Lee Harvey and Marina Oswald lived from November 1962 till March of 63. Long story short: A judge ordered its demolition in the summer of 2011, and owner Jane Bryant of Align LP fought off the bulldozers as long as she could. But enoughs enough, says Gilbert.
The condition of the Property has worsened since November 30, 2012, is an attractive nuisance to vandals, and threatens harm to the public health, safety and welfare, says Gilberts missive concerning the building about which Gordon Keith wrote last month. In addition, the City is concerned that Align may not have properly abated all asbestos containing materials from the property, including sheetrock that contains asbestos.
City Hall spokesman Frank Librio says this morning that city-employed contractors are due to pull up to the property this morning to conduct further asbestos abatement, which may last till Wednesday hard to say, given the soggy weather forecast. Cant really say how long abatement will take, Librio says. Contractors are going to wrap the structure, so you will see that today, and [they will] bring in a large generator.
The city maintains its a hazard; others, a roadblock to further development in the Bishop Arts District.

(6,241 posts)Oswald lived in Russia for a long time. And he supported Castro. The "Fairplay for Cuba Commitee"?
What sewer "historians" like Oliver Stone keep forgetting is how Kennedy continued Eisenhower's anti-Cuba programs, including the Bay Of Pigs fiasco and hiring the Mafia in wild schemes to kill Castro.
Kennedy was also appealing to right-wing groups in 1963, looking towards the election the following year.
Oswald had already tried killing one far-right figure, former General Walker.
But he missed.
Oswald saw Kennedy as a threat to his far-left paradise, namely Cuba.

(14,779 posts)Other sources do not. They take things out of context, ignores known facts that dispute their position or worse. The Warren Commission had to deal with the following facts:
1. The Rifle Oswald was using was only capable of three shots in the time period Kennedy was in range. While some witnesses report as many as eight shots, but 88% of people who reported hearing the shots report either three shots, two or three shots, or two shots (Please note, in urban environment when windows are still intact, the sounds of bullets bounce off windows and people tend to hear more shots then actually fired, i.e. they report echos of shots as additional shots, thus unlike the time restriction in operating the rifle, these reports are NOT considered reliable).
2. The rifle fired a 6.5x52mm round with a aluminum tipped full jacketed bullets. The round was designed to do the maximum damage to whatever it hit, without expanding, while being a less powerful round then the American 30'06 (7.62x63) and German 7.98x57 rounds (and fired an older more round bullet then the the "Spitzer" bullets used in the 30'06 and 7.98x57 rounds). The more rounded heavier bullet, retained more of its energy at long range, but at the cost of being much weaker at short range, short range being defined at less then 100 yards (Oswald fired at Kennedy when they were about 75 yards apart). The Aluminum tip make the bullet bottom heavy, so that when it hit something, the lighter tip would slow down first, then the bottom, causing the bullet to tumble. Being Full Metal Jacketed, the bullet will retain its shape, even as it bounces all over the place due to its bi-metal construction. In subsequent tests of the same TYPE of rifle, firing the same type of ammunition, the path of the "Magic Bullet" was duplicated, so it is POSSIBLE.

3. The Doctors who first worked on Kennedy tried to save his life, thus ended up operating on his head, in a hurry, to repair any damage. The Doctors trying to save Kennedy's life was NOT concerned at that point to save evidence on how the bullet entered and exited Kennedy.
4. One bullet ended up in a gurney in the Hospital where both then Texas Governor Connelly, and Kennedy were taken. The "Magic Bullet" is believed to have done almost all of the damage to Connelly (and the neck wounds to Kennedy).
The "Magic" bullet is the one theory that explains the above facts.

People may reject the Warren Report, but it does explain all the KNOWN facts of the case. If you believe a second shooter was involved (and you accept the Warren's report that the first shot MISSED everyone), the Warren Report can not be right, but in the absence of a second shooter, the Warren Report's Magic Bullet theory explains the injuries to Kennedy and Connelly.
Given the path the "Magic Bullet" did, hitting Kennedy in the neck, damaging his back bone, hitting the knot in Kennedy's tie (and the shirt where the knot was located), tumbling sideways about 25 inches and hitting Connelly in his back, at which point, due to the tumbling and slower speed having gone through the above, the bullet destroyed 5 inches of one of Connelly's rib, exited Connelly, then hit Connelly's wrist, hitting the wrist bone at its thickest, exit Connelly's body again, but then buried itself in Connelly's thigh. That is a lot of things to hit and retain energy and in tests, cited elsewhere, the bullet did lose all of its forward energy by the time it had penetrated the equivalent of Connelly's thigh.
My point is the Warren Commission's explanations is the best explanation of how the assassination of Kennedy occurred. People would prefer a conspiracy, but it looks like the work of one man.

(60,567 posts)Oswald was a far-left ideologue, certainly no friend of Republicans now and especially not at the time of the assassination.

(3,069 posts)The boarding house really isn't so important to the story, and is not a big tourist draw or anything like that. It is a rundown house in a rundown neighborhood in a part of town that is trying to revive itself. Several of its neighbors should be torn down too.

(60,567 posts)It was a great place to play when I was a kid. Very recently it's been re-graded and is now the home of some medical buildings that are part of UCSD Medical Center.
The guard shack, made of adobe brick, was preserved informally for a long time. Even that is gone now.
