Scientists uncover Antarctica's hidden landscape beneath ice sheet for first time

Source: Independent

Scientists have unveiled the most comprehensive map yet of the hidden landscape beneath Antarctica's colossal ice sheet, revealing a vibrant topography of mountains, canyons, valleys, and plains, alongside tens of thousands of previously undetected hills and smaller formations.

This groundbreaking research, published in the journal Science, utilised cutting-edge high-resolution satellite observations and a technique known as ice-flow perturbation analysis. This method infers subglacial terrain and conditions from surface features, enabling the mapping of the entire continent, including previously unexplored regions.

A more precise understanding of this subglacial bedrock is vital for predicting the climate-driven retreat of Antarctica's ice sheet. Earlier studies have shown that rugged terrain, such as jagged hillsides and mountain peaks, can impede this retreat.

Antarctica is about 40% larger than Europe, 50% larger than the United States and roughly half the area of Africa.

1. If Antarctica's ice sheet melts near its bedrock, it can slide into ocean & flood the coasts of all Earth's continents.

It's not ice now in the oceans that humans need to worry about. It's ice that's onland (say Antarctica and continental glaciers) that melts that will affect oceans' rising.

2. No country owns Antarctica but some have claims. The usual suspects.

Antarctica is a continent dedicated to science and peace under the Antarctic Treaty, with no indigenous population or typical cities, only rotating temporary staff and a few civilian outposts.

3. The ice above ocean level doesn't have to melt completely

It just has to melt enough to slide downhill into the ocean.

THEN it's a problem because it will create catastrophic tidal waves with rising water levels everywhere. Residents of islands and low-lying coastal areas (like Florida, New Orleans, Houston, the West Indies etc.) will have little warning to get to higher ground and avoid these tidal waves.

They are already experiencing flooding even when only affected by the moon, tides and rain.

What a metaphor for the times.

It would be nice if we f up as little of Antarctica as possible. This is fascinating and that it's being done as unobtrusively as possible is outstanding.

Thanks so much for sharing this, highplainsdem. ❤️

5. Thanks to the Republicans and their support of fossil fuels, we may see those hills and valleys emerge from the ice.
