Prosecutor Jack Smith to testify about Jan. 6 evidence against Trump

Former Special Counsel Jack Smith, who led two criminal cases against then-former President Donald Trump, asked to testify publicly as he defends the prosecutions against Republican accusations of politicization. On Jan. 22, he will get his chance.

Smith spent eight hours being deposed behind closed doors by the House Judiciary Committee last month, and told lawmakers he had evidence to convict President Donald Trump in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

"Our view of the evidence was that he caused it and that he exploited it and that it was foreseeable to him," Smith said of Trump's alleged culpability for the Capitol riot. The committee released video of the deposition and a 255-page transcript of it late on Dec. 31, New Year’s Eve.

Before that private deposition, the former prosecutor asked to instead give public testimony. Republican Chairman Jim Jordan (R–Ohio), who has called the cases against Trump "lawfare," rejected that request, but he later called for the Jan. 22 hearing in front of live cameras.

This is supposed to begin at 10:00 am EST today (1/22/26) and I expect the usual outlets like CSPAN (and hopefully whatever is left of PBS) will cover it.

that this time around it will be a media circus of preening right wing assholes mugging and conflating for the camera

as apposed to the closed door deposition that was actually somewhat professional.
