Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) expressed firm opposition to funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) after a Border Patrol agent fatally shot Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on Saturday.
We cant vote to fund this lawless Department of Homeland Security, Murphy told host Dana Bash on CNNs State of the Union. DHS oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which the administration has deployed to cities nationwide in a sweeping crackdown on migrants.
The shooting of Pretti, a 37-year-old American citizen, sparked widespread condemnation from Democratic senators on Capitol Hill many of whom vowed to oppose funding DHS without reforms ahead of Fridays deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown. That included Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), who wrote in a statement Saturday that his caucus will not provide the votes to pass a six-bill appropriations package if the DHS funding measure is included.
Whats happening in Minnesota is appalling and unacceptable in any American city, Schumer added. Democrats sought common sense reforms in the Department of Homeland Security spending bill, but because of Republicans refusal to stand up to President Trump, the DHS bill is woefully inadequate to rein in the abuses of ICE. I will vote no.
