Uber and DoorDash Lose Bid to Quash NYC Tipping Law
Source: PYMNTS
Delivery companies have reportedly lost their bid to halt New York Citys new tipping law.
Uber and DoorDash had asked a judge for an injunction to block the new law, which requires food delivery apps to offer customers the option to tip delivery workers, Reuters reported Friday (Jan. 23).
According to the report, U.S. District Judge George Daniels in Manhattan said the companies did not demonstrate a clear likelihood of succeeding on their claims that the laws, including a requirement that they recommend a minimum tip of 10%, violated their First Amendment rights to free speech.
DoorDash and Uber sued to block the law last month. It requires platforms such as theirs to ask customers to tip during checkout rather than delivery and to display suggested tip amounts.

(16,771 posts)Now the driver already has the tip in hand before you even know how the delivery is going to go.

(24,860 posts)You can opt to not tip at check out and tip when they arrive
Considering there are orders that want the driver to leave the food at the door and leave, this would give people that option
Some people are not home when the food arrives

(21,582 posts)The app doesn't remind you after the order is complete. You would have to go into the app again, click your last order, and then it will give tip options.
With the new law, it's just like it was before last year. It gives the option to tip (and how much to tip) right before you place your order. You can still decline.

That said, a lot of people up here in Canada have stopped tipping. When they bring you the machine here, the tip options start at 20%. The FOH is sometimes making more than BOH.
Same with delivery. They give you the machine and the options start at 20%. Really insane.
