As Capitol Hill digs out from the weekend snow this week, the Senate is setting up for another standoff over government funding after federal agents shot and killed a Minneapolis resident on Saturday. The bipartisan path forward for a package of six appropriation bills, including funding for the Department of Homeland Security, quickly evaporated on Saturday after the shooting.
Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said Sunday that Democrats would oppose the package unless the DHS bill is revamped. Senate Republicans must work with Democrats to advance the other five funding bills while we work to rewrite the DHS bill, Schumer said. This is best course of action, and the American people are on our side.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who is expected to run for governor, said Sunday on NBCs Meet the Press, There have been three killings in Minneapolis since the beginning of the year. And two have been committed by federal agents one ICE, and the other border control. Thats what were dealing with here.
The House already passed the remaining six spending bills last week and bundled them together into a single package for the Senate. The package includes the Financial Services, National Security-State, Defense, Labor-HHS-Education and Transportation-HUD measures, along with Homeland Security. If the Senate makes any changes, the measure would have to go back to the House for a new vote. So with the House not in session this week, a partial shutdown appears likely.

Mr. Mustard 2023
(352 posts)...pay federal taxes which will not go to blue states, be used as personal slush fund for Trump, and for ICE that is attacking us in blue states. So why the F*CK should I pay federal taxes? To fund ICE as they label me a "Domestic Terrorist"? Nope.
Pull back and refuse Republicans in every way dammit, because otherwise we are now required to fund our own demise.
So I should commend our Senate Dems for making this announcement and perhaps they will stick with this shut down, no matter what happens. Yes ICE is funded for a few years (at least) but when air travel ends, and most of U.S. lives are disrupted by the shutdown, it will matter! It will get everyone's attention!
We're required as of now, to pay for our own incarcerations, lack of services or deaths. Oh hell no!

(7,516 posts)There is no government for the people... only government by and for trump. He's stealing our tax dollars and not returning one cent to those of us who need it for services to us. He starves us, kills us, and wants even more of our money. I say bullshit! This time, the whole country is behind shutting it down to the DHS funding. Democrats, I hope, are watching and listening to not only their own constituents, but the entire country. There is no reason to keep this government open any longer. It works against the people. Fund government again when it's turned back over to The People.
