President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened Canada with a 50% tariff on any aircraft sold in the U.S., the latest salvo in his trade war with Americas northern neighbor as his feud with Prime Minister Mark Carney expands.

In Trumps latest threat, the Republican president said he was retaliating against Canada for refusing to certify jets from Savannah, Georgia-based Gulfstream Aerospace.
Trump said the U.S., in return, would decertify all Canadian aircraft, including its Bombardier. If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% Tariff on any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America, Trump said in his post.

(5,186 posts)There are several hundred in service flying scheduled service between regional airports and larger airline hubs. If Trump is really able to decertify all Canadian-built aircraft it will mean massive airline disruptions. Further, lots of Canadian built aircraft are involved in specialised missions like firefighting and a large number of Canadian-built helicopters are used by police and other emergency services in the U.S. finally, the US military operates a number of highly specialised variants of the CRJ and other aircraft types.
This is (another) insane thing to do and the basic issue is moth the Transport Canada wont certify certain American aircraft types its that they will no longer act as a rubber stamp for the U.S. FAA in the wake of the 737 MAX certification debacle.
