Utah Republicans have filed a federal lawsuit to block the states new House maps, which give Democrats a shot at winning a seat in the red state.
Today we took action. I, along with elected officials throughout our state, filed a federal lawsuit to defend the constitutional process by which Utah chooses its representatives, Rep. Celeste Maloy (R-Utah) wrote on social platform X. We cant just sit idly by as our representative government is weakened. She added, This lawsuit exists to restore the proper constitutional balance.
Maloy and Rep. Burgess Owens (R-Utah), alongside several fellow Utah Republicans, filed the suit on Monday, alleging that a state judge violated the Constitution last year when she tossed GOP-drawn maps and imposed a new plan.
The Republicans are asking the courts to remand the selection of a congressional map to the Legislature. If the chamber, where Republicans hold a supermajority in both chambers, doesnt select a new map, they asked for the 2021 map to be reinstated.
