Poll: Low Support For Armed Guards In Schools

The National Rifle Association's much-maligned proposal to put armed police officers in schools across the country has little support, a poll released Wednesday shows.

According to the findings from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling, only 41 percent of registered voters nationwide support the NRA's idea while 50 percent are opposed.

As for the attitudes toward the pro-gun lobby, the public is split. Forty-two percent said they have a favorable opinion of the NRA, compared with 45 percent who have an unfavorable opinion. That's a far cry from a late-December Gallup poll that showed 54 percent of respondents expressing a favorable view of the NRA. PPP's survey also showed that 53 percent of voters would support passage of stricter gun laws by Congress.

PPP conducted its survey Jan. 3-6 using automated phone interviews with 1,000 registered voters. It has a margin of error three percentage points.

school staff with no intense nor ongoing training? That they have come to realize that even the trained Jefferson County Deputy Sheriff at Columbine could do nothing to counter the assault rifle he faced, despite trying to engage them? What? Americans don't want their 5 and six year olds terrified by being forced to attend an armed camp? They realize themselves how easy it would be for the gun in that teacher, janitor, administrator, or even security guard's possession to be accidentally discharged or come into the hands of a child?

12. I do not want

my grandsons in a school with either armed teachers or volunteer armed posses. A resource officer is okay, I guess, though I'm pretty ambivalent about him/her being armed. A panic button that locks all classroom doors and simultaneously notifies law enforcement would be a good thing, if such could be rigged.

4. Here's why I think we should take the NRA up on this.

To me the NRA is proposing gun control. Think about it.

If we have to put armed guards in schools then the only proper way to do it is to train and pay them. In order to do that we will need to collect taxes. The only fair way to do that is to put the burden on gun owners. They should be the ones that pay because they create the need.

That means we will have to register all guns and their magazines on a yearly basis. That registration base can be used to track guns. We can also use the tax rate on guns and magazines to make it prohibitive to own certain types of guns.

But, yes, if you called their bluff, it would be amusing to see the effects of the backlash.

The NRA wants people volunteer to do this, and they want to be the ones to train them.

and the NRA approval numbers are way too high.

What are people thinking?

5 yr olds have equal rights under the 2nd amendment to own firearms too. .. and a frustrated 11 yr old who isn't happy about being bullied at school also has a right to firearms according to the 2nd amendment.

The 2nd amendment makes no distinction of age. And yet we found a need to write laws to protect the public - JUST AS WE need laws against handguns and assault rifles.

16. 41% is not "little support"... that is staggering support.

The idea is INSANE so the headline is not "50% of people do not support INCREDIBLY INSANE initiative."

The sensible headline datum is that 41% do support it, which is mind-bending.
