A group of 13 states that did not support President Trump in the last election sued the administration on Wednesday over canceled federal climate funds. The lawsuit challenges the Trump administrations cancellation of billions of dollars in funding for climate-friendly projects, primarily in Democrat-leaning states.
It alleges that the moves were a violation of Congresss right to appropriate funds in the Constitution, as well as of the Administrative Procedure Act. In early October, as the Administration sought a cudgel to wield in budget negotiations, Defendants deployed this unlawful policy as an opportunistic way to hurt the Administrations political enemies and those associated with them, the lawsuit said.
The suit was filed by California, Colorado, Washington state, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin.
We will not allow Trump to sell out our future to his biggest donors, said California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) in a written statement. Trump didnt just tear up a contract: he defied Congress, jeopardized more than 200,000 good-paying jobs, and robbed billions of dollars in health savings from communities that have been hit the hardest by pollution.
