Rep. Al Green Calls Out Trump's Racist Social Media Post At The State Of The Union

Source: Huff Post

Feb 24, 2026, 10:39 PM EST | Updated 8 hours ago

During the State of the Union address on Tuesday, Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) held a sign that called out a racist social media post President Donald Trump recently shared of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama.

The video, which was widely condemned by Democrats and Republicans, depicted the Obamas as apes. Trump eventually removed the video, though he declined to apologize for it. The president also claimed that he had only seen the beginning of the video and hadn’t seen the racist frames of the clip.

“Black people aren’t apes!” Green’s sign read. Green held the sign while Trump entered the House chamber and during the beginning of his speech.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) tried to take the sign from Green after seeing it, and Reps. Pat Fallon (R-Texas) and John McGuire (R-Va.) also attempted to block it from cameras’ line of sight. Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) tried to snatch it out of his hand, but Green dodged.

The man knows how to leave a mark! He is great! But I am a bit surprized he didn't end up in an ICE concentration camp in an undisclosed location.

Refusing to sit still. Showing up is bravery.

And free pr all over the internet. People are talking keeping the story alive.

Good trouble.

and represented the sentiment of a community of over 48 million who feel the same way (myself included).

He is who he is.

I expect that those (D)s who did choose to attend did so for "performative" reasons.

Visible pushback on yet another and even more offensive racist act from drumphf!

I think there's a decorum rule, but drumphf gets away with so much, has barely if any decorum- sometimes you gotta bend, or break the rules with a bully!

each with their own sign, this would have been very effective. Also, hard to intimidate 100 people, easy to intimidate 1.

Dem leadership refuses to fight.

Green was removed from the chamber shortly after by the sergeant-at-arms.

The "sergeant-at-arms" is the main "security" for the chamber so probably has a protocol for this.
