A big change is coming to Social Security that beneficiaries may not notice

(NEXSTAR) – The Social Security Administration (SSA) is rolling out a major change to the way it handles customer service.

Instead of relying on local field offices, the Administration is moving to a centralized, national network to handle appointments, benefits questions and other issues.

“We are utilizing technology to improve the customer experience and give our employees the tools they need to better serve the American people,” a spokesperson for the SSA told Nexstar. “The implementation of this internal-facing technology will occur on a rolling basis this year. Customers will not notice any changes aside from expanded appointment availability.”

Multiple outlets are reporting that the transition will begin March 7, and, despite the SSA’s assurance of a seamless transition, there are those who have doubts. Some have expressed concern that an SSA employee potentially thousands of miles away from the caller may have difficulty with state-specific questions that were previously handled by a local office.

Just so they can fire more employees. The services are being enshittified. And this makes it easier for a private equity goon like Frank Bisignano (who runs SSA AND the IRS) to take over all of its operations. That will COST more than the government running it. A LOT more. Those fees will be deducted from seniors' monthly payments.

When he tries to set up an account on their blasted login.com, he writes in his cell number. Several steps later, he enters the very same phone number, and the system says it's unable to verify the phone number.

He went to the local SSA office, but nobody there could help him with this. Someone told him that LOTS of people are complaining about having trouble setting up accounts.

This is insane. We need his Social Security payments to survive on. He's just a few months from turning 70. He can't just goout and get another job in his field.

They can't just stop Social Security, but they can make it very difficult for people to get the money that's owed them.

I got him a new phone last year and put it on our family's phone plan, which is in my name.

But even so, how can we possibly get around it?
Our last land line was from when we lived in another state, and we moved more than 2 years ago.

Cell phone service isn't as reliable as people like to think it is. If there are elderly people in the home, you absolutely need a landline to fall back on in the event of an emergency.

Many automated systems simply don't work with cell phones, either. While that makes for funny videos on social media, it's not so funny when you can't do business in real life.

Get that landline, put his name on it, and try again. If your cell phone service is too expensive for you to afford a landline, then get a TracFone for your cellular service. That's what I do, so that I can afford both. Wishing you the best of luck!

When we got fiber they discontinued our traditional landline and made it internet service. When the internet goes out so does our phone.

I needed a copy of my soc sec card and couldn't get it online because my LOGIN.com is linked to my business and my other email is linked to my parent's account as their POA, etc. Anyway, tried calling to get an appointment that I must have as the local SSA does not accept walk ins and was on hold for over 2 hours. freakin insanity that such a simple task took so much time

If he can successfully create the account and log in with the "other " number, then he'll have the opportunity to change it to his real number later. They still need to verify the number you start out with, so it has to be a real phone number (don't make up a fake number.)

My issue was that I had an official birth certificate and US passport to show for identity, but they wouldn't accept a photocopy or a scan. They wanted me to MAIL my IDs to the Social Security office. This was when the office was closed for Covid lockdown. There was no way I would have mailed my original IDs anywhere, and risk not getting them returned. I had to wait almost a year for the lockdown to be over so I could go in person to show my identification. The problem was cleared up immediately, but ONLY because I went IN PERSON to the SSA office.

assistant hell and never get an answer to your question or solution to your problem? That's what Social Security will turn into. Especially with this regime steering us into the abyss.

have to do with Social Security?

I get it. It's just a run-in to another article, but the wise-ass in me couldn't resist. 😉

Undoing tRump's dismantling of our government is going to take decades. You can bet this is going to be a headache for everyone who has problems with SS, and that number will be drastically increasing now that DOGE has "fixed" it.

I'm the quintessential wise-ass, so please don't take much of what I write at face value.
It's a character flaw I've had since childhood, and I'm 76 now. I haven't given up hope that I can change, though. 😉
