Trump wants role in picking Iran's leader; Israel warns Lebanese to flee for their lives

"President Donald Trump said he should have a say in choosing Irans next supreme leader, and fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon intensified Thursday as the U.S.-Israeli assault on Iran entered its sixth day. The House rejected a bipartisan measure intended to halt further U.S. military action in Iran. Save your lives and evacuate your homes immediately, Israeli forces warned residents across southern Lebanon and Beiruts southern suburbs on Thursday. The evacuation area included the dense neighborhood of Dahiyeh, a Hezbollah stronghold. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the United States would bitterly regret sinking the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean. Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates reported fresh attacks, as Iran said it launched retaliatory strikes throughout the region, including against Kurdish forces in Iraq. Iran denied firing a missile toward Turkey a day after Turkey said NATO air defenses shot down an Iranian ballistic missile heading toward its airspace. Targeting Turkey, a NATO member, would be a major escalation in the conflict.

... Lebanon in the crosshairs: Beirut was wakened Thursday by at least six Israeli airstrikes slamming into the southern suburbs of the city. At least 102 people have been killed in Lebanon since Hezbollah entered the war late Sunday, the Lebanese Health Ministry said, as hundreds of strikes hit across the country. Israeli troops have moved further into Lebanon, displacing tens of thousands.

Israeli officials threaten broader strikes: We are now on the northern border, after the IDF instructed all residents to evacuate, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said in a video posted to his X account. You wanted to bring hell upon us, but you brought hell upon yourselves. Dahiyeh will look like Khan Younis, he said, referring to a city in the Gaza Strip decimated by Israeli bombardment..."

That sounds insane, but to be fair, he wants a say in choosing the United States' next leader too.

At least he's consistent in something.

Just wanna get that straight. Regime change with no plan for the change. No plan for whom. No plan for when. No plan for what it'll take. No plan for what it'll cost.

All because you raped kids.

If you just post it, those whacky characters that have replaced the curly quotes from the article with garbage characters will be correct.

Like so:

The House rejected a bipartisan measure intended to halt further U.S. military action in Iran. “Save your lives and evacuate your homes immediately,”

Also, you can't edit it again after that or they'll come back. This issue is caused by making a round trip to the database, which you avoid by posting straight away w/o a preview.

If you want, that's the fix

such as ones you'll get in Word software, and online articles, that you may copy in to a DU post. The curly quotes don't survive a round trip to the database (which is what preview and edit cause to happen). You have to just post them and leave them alone. For now.

“test” ‘test’

The curly quotes work if I just post but as soon as I preview or edit they break (turn into different characters). You can it happening

Edit actually someone fixed the software, works correctly now

Killing civilians is a war crime, whether you "asked them to evacuate" or not.

Forced displacement is also a war crime.

I don't know why the press and pro-Israel liberals continue to pretend that forced displacement of civilian populations inoculates the IDF and the Israeli state apparatus from war crimes. It does not. It is a war crime in itself.

https://www.reuters.com/graphics/IRAN-CRISIS/MAPS/znpnmelervl/#israel-orders-mass-evacuations-in-lebanon-bombards-beirut

"... Israel’s military spokesperson posts evacuation orders on social media platform X. On Wednesday, the spokesperson ordered residents to leave a swathe of southern Lebanon amounting to nearly 8% of Lebanese territory. On Thursday, the spokesperson issued evacuation orders for Beirut’s southern suburbs with a roughly drawn map that included multiple suburbs and other towns, as well as written instructions that only mentioned some of those areas. Asked to clarify which areas in particular should evacuate, an IDF spokesperson told Reuters the map was “amorphic” and that the text was “what matters.”

"On Friday, the U.N. human rights chief, Volker Turk, said Israel’s evacuation orders raise serious concerns under international law.

“These blanket, ‌massive displacement orders we are talking here about hundreds and thousands of people,” he said. “This raises serious concern under international humanitarian law, and in particular when it comes to issues around forced transfer.”
