Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on Sunday slammed the Trump administrations terrible decision to lift some sanctions on Russian oil amid the war in Iran.
I think this is a terrible decision, but it is one of the things that comes about as a result of the unpredictability of war, Schiff told NBC Newss Kristen Welker on Meet the Press, noting that the U.S. is essentially giving Russia $140 million a day as Moscow is providing intelligence to Iran to better attack and kill American troops.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Thursday that the U.S. would temporarily remove sanctions on Russian oil stranded at sea, as the administration looks to tamp down rising gas and oil prices. The move has agitated some critics, who argue its counterintuitive to the administrations efforts to help bring about an end to Russias war in Ukraine.
Bessent said on social media that the narrowly tailored lifting of sanctions will not provide significant financial benefit to the Russian government. The sanction exemptions will remain in place until mid-April, according to the Treasury Department. There are about 130 million barrels of Russian oil at sea, according to Kpler, while the price for one barrel of crude oil hovers around $100.
