Elections to know about this week. What's up for grabs in Wisconsin, Georgia?

Whoever wins gets the job. That's what is at stake in elections in Georgia and Wisconsin on April 7. Voters in Georgia's 14th congressional district will cast ballots in a runoff for Marjorie Taylor Greene's replacement in the U.S. House of Representatives, and Wisconsin voters will choose a new judge for the state Supreme Court, among other local positions.

These races are part of a unique roster of2026 (sic) elections across the country that aren't primaries but offer opportunities for Republicans and Democrats to either maintain or gain power. And the stakes are high, even in the case of state- and local-level positions, as the success of President Donald Trump's second-term agenda hangs in the political balance. Here's what to know about April 7 races and why they matter for the country:

An open US House seat in Georgia

April 7 marks a runoff in the Peach State between two candidates: Democrat Shawn Harris and Trump-backed Republican Clay Fuller. The March 10 primary headed to a runoff after no candidate earned over 50% of the vote: Harris finished with 37.3% of the vote in the primary, according to CNN and AP, the most of any Democrat by a wide margin. Trump-backed Fuller finished with 34.9% of the vote, beating out Republicans Colton Moore, Brian Stover and Tom Gray.

Harris has led Fuller in campaign fundraising: As of April 2, Fuller showed $1.2 million while Harris topped $6.4 million, according to the Federal Election Commission. Harris has drawn support from Democratic heavyweights at rallies in Rome, Georgia, including former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock. But Fuller's victory over GOP peers last month may signal that Trump's endorsement still weighs heavily on the minds of voters in the highly Republican district.
