'They Failed': White House Drops Bombshell That Trump Will Discuss US Withdrawal With NATO Leader

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt dropped some bombshell news at Wednesday afternoons briefing when she revealed that President Donald Trump would be discussing the United States potential exit from NATO with Secretary General Mark Rutte later that day.
After being asked, On NATO, can you tell me, is the United States still considering withdrawing from NATO? Is that still a possibility? Leavitt replied, Its something the president has discussed, and I think its something the president will be discussing in a couple of hours with Secretary General Rutte.. And perhaps youll hear directly from the president following that meeting later this afternoon, she added.
Earlier in the same press conference, a reporter noted that some European allies have issued a joint statement saying, our governments will contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, before asking Leavitt, Whats the administrations reaction to that joint statement? Does that smooth things over when the president meets with NATO Secretary General a little bit later this afternoon?. She replied:
I have a direct quote from the president of the United States on NATO, and I will share it with all of you: They were tested, and they failed. And I would add its quite sad that NATO turned their backs on the American people over the course of the last six weeks when its the American who have been funding their defense. As you know, President Trump will be meeting with Secretary Rutte in a couple of hours here at the White House, and I know he looks forward to having a very frank and candid conversation with him.

forbidding any unilateral withdraw from NATO.
S.J.Res.37 - A joint resolution requiring the advice and consent of the Senate or an Act of Congress to suspend, terminate, or withdraw the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty and authorizing related litigation, and for other purposes.
(in 2023, they inserted that into an annual National Defense Authorization Act, which Congress passed and President Biden signed)

so it will be interesting to see how much more pride he is willing to swallow swallow in service to this dirtbag who hates him and loves humiliating him.

(4,621 posts)he won't say anything and another half assed Executive Order will be issued.
What will become of the various bases we use now, under NATO aegis, I am wondering? Would we keep them, a foot in the door maybe, jumping off points for an invasion of the Continent, it could be noted?
If I was a NATO host nation -- the UK, Italy, Germany, etc -- that is how I would take it, and tell them to get the hell out. Then there will be some trouble!

(3,307 posts)Losing all those military hardware contracts.
That is already an issue with the Grippen and F-35.
They will cut their losses due to no trust in America.

(2,341 posts)His budget for the Military and MIC is an astronomical ONE TRILLION PLUS DOLLARS for next year......
If he were to succeed at getting out of NATO, it would mean shutting down ALL of our Military Bases in all those countries, and abandoning them..........Certainly giving PUTIN and orgasm and an Aneurism at the same time.........
All of the Military would return to the U.S. just in time for him to spread them across the U.S. to enforce his Martial Law, due to him illegally enacting the Insurrection Act, and throwing out the Posse Comatatus Act at the same time.......both of which he has already instituted on a limited basis, mostly in Blue States and along the Mexican Border.....

(3,735 posts)to get him to POTUS, then for him to get the USA to drop out of NATO.
Not sure Mango Mussolini has that authority, but who knows what Congress might do if it comes down to them. A certain Pennsylvania senator one can assume will be all in.

(2,354 posts)So he can have his tantrum.
Trump can't unilaterally withdraw, either....Congress will have to act.
He can probably do a lot to screw things up without Congressional authorization.....but the military isn't going to like the idea of losing their European bases. I expect there will be massive behind the scenes push back from the professionals.
It's just more bullying from Trump. He'll shake them down for something and not do a damn thing.....remains to seen how much he can get.

(9,132 posts)I gather he's seen it as his mission as NATO Secretary general to be something of a Trump whisperer, but many of the European allies are still reeling from Rutte calling Trump "daddy" last year. I mean, pass the sickbag, Alice. Then he seems to have undermined key NATO partners like Macron, whose outspokenness in defence of sanity and international law was something I'd rather have heard from a secretary general worth his salt. Rather than this ... whateverthehell it's meant to be:
"It's therefore a nuanced picture," Rutte said.
Whether or not that point - and the Secretary General's own warm relationship with Trump - are enough for the US president remains to be seen.
Asked if the world was safer now than it was before the war, Rutte said "absolutely" and credited that to Trump's "leadership" in degrading Iran's nuclear threats.
He added Nato members do not see the war in Iran as illegal, and most agreed it was important to degrade Iran's nuclear capabilities.

(1,468 posts)Secondly, we are the only ones to ever ask for NATO help after 9/11.
Third, the damage is already done. We have a terrible reputation worldwide, and no intelligent European will be holding their breath for help from what was once the USA.

U.S. President Donald Trump appears to have set his eyes on Greenland again while venting frustration at NATO, as the diplomatic fallout from Iran war exposes rifts in Washington's ties with the security alliance.
In a Truth Social post Wednesday evening stateside, Trump said that "NATO WASN'T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON'T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN. REMEMBER GREENLAND, THAT BIG, POORLY RUN, PIECE OF ICE!!!"
The latest broadside comes after Trump announced a 2-week ceasefire after more than a month of fighting with Iran. Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO members for not joining the war effort in Iran, saying his call for action was "a great test," while threatening to pull out of the alliance.
Trump has taken aim at NATO and Greenland in recent days. "It all began with, if you want to know the truth, Greenland," Trump told reporters at a White House press conference Monday. "We want Greenland. They don't want to give it to us. And I said, 'bye, bye.'"
