President Donald Trump said his administration doesn't plan to drop the Department of Justice's probe into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, and again threatened to fire him if he stays in the role past mid-May. Trump has nominated former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh to the position, but Powell has said he'll stay in the job on a temporary basis if Warsh isn't confirmed before May 15, when Powell's term as chair ends.
Then Ill have to fire him, Trump told Fox Business on April 15 in response to a question about Powell potentially staying on. "If he's not leaving on time I've held back on firing him. I've wanted to fire him. But I hate to be controversial. I want to be uncontroversial."
Trump nominated Warsh to the position, but Warsh has yet to be confirmed by the Senate. After a paperwork delay, Warsh has since filed required financial disclosures, setting up a Senate confirmation hearing next week. However, his confirmation isn't guaranteed. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-North Carolina, vowed to stall any nominations to the Fed until the Justice Department ends its probe into Powell related to the budget for a a major renovation project at the central bank's headquarters.
Former Fed Chairs Janet Yellen, Ben Bernanke and Alan Greenspan called the criminal inquiry "an unprecedented attempt to use prosecutorial attacks to undermine" the central bank's independence in January. Powell himself condemned it in a rare video statement.

He was slapped down by courts, and that is the ONLY reason he didn't fire the fed chief who dared say NO to him.

(32,478 posts)Powell said last month he would not step down from the Fed as long as the Department of Justices criminal investigation is ongoing.
I have no intention of leaving the Board until the investigation is well and truly over with transparency and finality, Powell said.
Firing Powell would raise significant legal questions and would not take place immediately Powell has said he would defend the Feds independence and would almost certainly challenge any action to remove him.
Although Trump can legally fire Fed officials, he can do so only for cause, according to Section 10 of the Federal Reserve Act.

(170,480 posts)Powell's "Chair term" is up May 15 and 45 has been trying to fire him for a year. He already attempted to "fire" Lisa Cook and the SCOTUS said "um no" while her case is proceeding.
45 has been carrying out bogus "investigations" to "show cause" for firing and he refuses to end those - the latest dealing with Powell "making the news" with Petulant Pirro's prosecutors, suddenly showing up for an "inspection" of the Federal Reserve building construction just yesterday. He's blaming him personally for cost-overruns in the renovations of the building.
The "for cause" excuse for Cook was bogus "mortgage fraud" crap courtesy of the criminal Bill Pulte.

(32,478 posts)If Chair Jerome Powell Powell stays on as a Fed governor after his successor is confirmed, President Donald Trump said he'll have him removed from office.
Trump said the investigation into the renovation at the Fed's headquarters must continue.

There is a big difference.
If Chair Jerome Powell stays on as a Fed governor after his successor is confirmed, President Donald Trump said he'll have him removed from office.
Trump said the investigation into the renovation at the Fed's headquarters must continue.

(170,480 posts)I just provided lots of links to what has transpired the past year and you are of course giving your opinion.
I believe that the SCOTUS smackdown on his threats to fire Lisa Cook has put a damper on whether any of that happens (i.e., either before the Chair term is up or after), but that remains to be seen due to the corporate push back of him fucking with the monetary system in that manner, and he somewhat responds to that with the endless TACO cycles when his revenge cycle hasn't kicked in again.

(170,480 posts)Much of last year, 45 threatened and insulted Powell -
Trump blasts Fed chair Powell and looks forward to his 'termination' (April 17, 2025)
Trump ramps up attacks on Powell, demands 'loser' Fed chair lower rates 'NOW' (April 21, 2025)
Then he claimed he "wouldn't" but then had his sycophants looking up ways to do it anyway -
Trump says he has 'no intention' of firing Fed Chair Powell (April 22, 2025)
Then 45 brought in the boondoggle Bill Pulte to get started on one "for cause" angle (similar to what was done to Comey, James, and Cook) -
Trump's top housing regulator calls on Congress to investigate Powell (July 3, 2025_
And then in comes Hassett and Vought to follow-on with yet another "for cause" angle (the current one) -
Hassett says White House probing Fed renovation costs, authority to fire Powell (July 13, 2025)
And soon came back to Powell again after multiple TACO moments -
Trump is considering suing Jerome Powell, White House says (August 12, 2025)
He then pivoted to getting rid of Lisa Cook -
Trump administration moves forward with push to fire Fed governor Lisa Cook (September 15, 2025)
Then Hassett started measuring the drapes for the job -
Hassett says Federal Reserve can reject Trump's views if he is chair (December 15, 2025)
So with all these threats, it got to the point where Powell even made a rare video this past January to address this ridiculousness (Jan 11, 2026) -
