Congress members say Delaney Hall detainees fed small portions 'often' containing maggots

Source: NBC

Democratic members of Congress on Wednesday said they observed dire conditions within a federal immigration detention center in New Jersey where protesters have been demonstrating for days and asserting that detainees are on a hunger strike.

U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler, a Manhattan Democrat, said detainees at Delaney Hall in Newark are being given small portions of food that “very often” contain maggots and that the only medication they receive is Tylenol.

One woman, he said, had a lump in her breast but was still waiting on a mammogram more than a month into her detention. Another detainee was suffering from colon cancer but wasn’t receiving any treatment.

“The bottom line is, if you are human, if you are American, you cannot support what is going on here,” said U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman, another Manhattan Democrat who toured the facility Wednesday. “They’re living in jail conditions, and none of these people are criminals.”

Cheaper than deporting them or organizing a formal killing program.

Private prisons are profiting from spending nothing on food and medicine.

We must demand the right for doctors to visit and treat the prisoners. Also demand the right to bring medicine and food to the people since the concentration camp overlords will not provide necessities.

Better yet, close them down and make private prisons illegal. They have no place in a democracy.

Excerpt:

Since taking office in January, Sherrill has challenged the Trump administration’s hard-line immigration policies.

Toward the beginning of her term, she banned ICE agents from using state property as a staging area. She also signed a law prohibiting ICE agents from wearing masks in public.

Trump officials sued New Jersey in federal court to block both of Sherrill’s policies.

In a separate lawsuit, Sherrill’s administration moved to stop the federal government from transforming a warehouse in Roxbury into a new immigrant detention center, arguing the building lacks adequate infrastructure for water, sewer, and bathrooms.

It's probably cheaper to feed then clean food but that would be less dehumanizing.

To get fly-blown, and eggs to hatch. I don't think this happens even in our regular prison systems.

Wonder how many are dying of food poisoning that we don't hear about?

These are not prisons. These are concentration camps. Hardened criminals don't belong in places like this, much less men, women, and children whose only crime is being brown. The people who put them there and the people who profit from their misery deserve to be tried and punished for crimes against humanity. And we should start at the top.
