As inauguration approaches, Obama’s most virulent foes want the celebration stopped

Source: Washington Post

Eldon Bell, a retired Air Force officer and physician, is making no plans to see Barack Obama’s second inauguration, in part because Bell considers the president arrogant and dishonest, but more so because Bell is not yet persuaded that the swearing-in will occur at all.

“Whether I watch depends on who’s being inaugurated,” says Bell, 78. “If it’s this guy, probably not, because I don’t pay much attention to illegitimate things.”

At this late date, Bell and his fellow believers in the notion that Obama was born overseas or is otherwise ineligible to be president still expect some court somewhere to buy into one of their theories. After more than 100 court cases, no judge has.

Even after Obama convincingly won reelection despite four years of low popularity ratings, a sluggish economy and a highly motivated opposition, advocates of various counterfactual theories about the president — he’s a foreigner, he’s a Marxist, he’s a Muslim — say they’re sticking to their fight.

“This inauguration is a mistake and those who permit it to happen will have to live with their own consciences,” says Bell, a former Washingtonian who retired to South Dakota. . .

They are getting screwier and screwier by the day; no doubt the security at this Inauguration will be the heaviest ever.

It needs to be.

It worked to elect the Tea Party in 2010. So there's no way to count on something that good from them.

Their shills are paid way too much to shut up now. Their mewlings get more bizarre everyday, but it's not gonna stop, I'm sorry to say.

The fact that they gave Wayne LaPierre and Alex Jones as much air time as they did and Jones on every single talk show - ranting and raving - even though these wackjobs are inciting near riots, hasn't stopped them giving them coverage.

This is the Tea Party Two movement that Grover Nordquist and the Koch brothers are funding. Tea Party One worked in 2010 and they're aiming for 2014.

One BIG "hats off" to Obama is the real and omni-present danger of some looney wanting to take him out. I would not want to live with that threat dogging me (or my family!) for the rest of my life. In this respect, he's literally sacraficed himself for this nation.

elections. And we are still suffering from the results of having a TWICE,

"Even after Obama convincingly won reelection despite four years of low popularity ratings..."

In a nation of people divided roughly down the middle by radically opposed ideologies, it's hard to imagine how any politician could obtain a popularity rating of even 50%. In practice, the limit seems even lower than that, due to the Goldilocks Effect: There's a large portion of the population that doesn't like the politician because he's too liberal, another large portion that doesn't like him because he's too conservative, and a small portion that like him because he's "just right." Polls that ask people to rate a politician without comparing him to a competing politician will always produce useless and misleading results.

In the case of an election between two candidates the situation is very different. Voters are forced to choose between two alternatives, and there are many who see their choice as "the lesser of two evils." Our president won reelection due to the combined votes of people who considered him "just right" and people, both liberal and conservative, who considered him "the lesser of two evils."

There were always cranks. Those guys who wrote letters to the editor every day. The man who yelled at kids to get off his lawn. The women who had coffee in their kitchens every morning and ranted about the way things ought to be. People who listened to Rush.

But now with the internet all these people can be organized and controlled and directed. Millions of people being fed the same talking points, the same propaganda, every day. No need to use mimeograph machines to spread the word.

He, along with so many other deranged anti-government wingnuts, earn/earned their living via government paychecks/retirement checks.

A law should be passed saying that if you hate the government, you can't take their money.

And no, there is no equivalence to left opposition to government policies. Liberals just hate SOME of the POLICIES (only). These insane wingnuts hate government in general. IOW, all of it.

We went to the President's first inauguration, just after my brother got back from Afghanistan, and we're going to this one too.

I love how these articles stick in useless bits like 'retired Air Force officer' as if every person in the military think like this or it lends him more credence to his cracked conspiracy theories.
