Clergy Demand An End To Gun Violence

Source: Huffington Post

As New York legislators prepare to pass the strictest gun control law in the nation and Vice President Joe Biden leads a task force on the White House's response to gun violence, a group of religious leaders are joining in Washington, D.C. to demand quick action on gun control.

The group, Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence, is holding a press conference Tuesday at the United Methodist Building, which is just around the corner from the White House, and delivering a letter to President Barack Obama and Congress signed by 40 national religious leaders urging action on guns.

HuffPost obtained an early copy of the letter and list of signees. Their demands: "Every person who buys a gun should pass a criminal background check," "high capacity weapons and ammunition magazines should not be available to civilians" and "gun trafficking should be made a federal crime."

All the links seem to point back in the direction of the BC.

Thanks for weighing in, clergy! Now, since killing in the name of religion has been so rampant through history, let's limit you to rosaries with no more than 7 beads.

... but that's just because I'm a cynical asshole who (usually correctly) smells astroturf instead of grassroots in every major movement.

That said, there's no reason there shouldn't be background checks (as long as, like the New York bill, there is only a low cost associated and it's not prohibitively expensive).

BTW, gun trafficking IS a federal crime. Straw purchases are illegal under federal law. Interstate transportation of firearms for illegal purposes is illegal under federal law.

to be like a current NICS check. Basically looking at the stuff already on the 4473 forms (criminal offenses, mental court orders, protection orders, etc.).

How about,

Everyone who applies for a license to own a gun has to pass a psychological fitness exam first?
