Obama’s Limo To Get D.C. ‘Taxation Without Representation’ Tags

Source: TPM

Starting inaguration weekend, President Obama's limo will sport Washington, D.C.'s "Taxation Without Represenation" license plates, the White House confirmed to TPM Tuesday. The new plates will remain for the duration of Obama's second term.

“President Obama has lived in the District now for four years, and has seen first-hand how patently unfair it is for working families in D.C. to work hard, raise children and pay taxes, without having a vote in Congress," White House spokesman Keith Maley said in a statement. "Attaching these plates to the presidential vehicles demonstrates the President’s commitment to the principle of full representation for the people of the District of Columbia and his willingness to fight for voting rights, Home Rule and budget autonomy for the District.”

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray thanked the president on Twitter.

Have spoken to White House & want to thank @BarackObama for agreeing to place "Taxation w/o Representation" DC tags on his limo. #FreeDC

They most certainly should have some sort of say in the taxation laws that are passed.

Then they'd have Representatives, Senators, the whole thing.

It seemed to work ok after southern DC re-merged with VA.

As states go, DC would be a funny little thing.

For too many years, DC has not gotten much support from the legislators who (come from elsewhere but) live there. This is the big kahuna.

I do not agree with the idea of giving Washington, D.C. representation in Congress. Washington, D.C. is not a state. The U.S. Constitution gives representation to states. If the people of Washington, D.C. want representation in Congress they should either push to have D.C. made into a state, or push to have it made into a city of either Maryland or Virginia.

We'd only need a simple majority of support in congress to become a state. With a population larger than Wyoming and now Vermont, it's well past time.

The sad part is that with the current Congress I do not think you all would get it. You all should be able to become a state, but I think most, if not all, Republicans would vote against the measure in that it would result in two more electoral college votes for the Democratic Presidential candidate.

we're not going to get there with this congress. But we want to keep the momentum going so that we'll be ready the next time the Dems control congress and the presidency.
