MADISON Less than a week after the bombshell revelation that her campaign infrastructure was in disarray, Wisconsin's Democratic Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez has ended her gubernatorial campaign.
"As we have continued to dig into our financial reports, it has become clear that there are issues that would be an ongoing distraction not just for this campaign, but for the primary and for Wisconsin. This race is too important to Wisconsin to let that happen," Rodriguez said in a statement on July 17.
The collapse of Rodriguez's campaign occurred just as it had appeared to embark on an upswing. In recent weeks, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and former Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. CEO Missy Hughes had both ended their campaigns and endorsed Rodriguez. The lieutenant governor announced late Sunday, July 12, that she had fired her campaign manager after she said she discovered her account was more than $1 million short of what she believed she had.
Rodriguez's January campaign finance report cited more than $100,000 it did not actually raise. The report included more than $100,000 in duplicate contributions, or single donations recorded twice. Rodriguez also told reporters Monday, July 13, that she learned campaign expenses had not been properly documented.

Without any evidence, I wondered idly if the individual was paid to undermine her campaign. Who knows, but Im leaning toward flawed systems and training.
Finding that she had been in third place is a relief.

I live in a red part of one of the reddest counties in the state. From that perspective, I see the racism and misogynistic idiocy that permeates Wisconsin. Progressive Wisconsinites should not underestimate that. I believe one of these two can cut through it.

(43,544 posts)Maybe she had a "volunteer" handling the financial records ... or maybe it's something more sinister. I don't know, but it's a rookie mistake for Sara Rodriguez. Better luck next time!

(61,309 posts)While it is easy to see how a contribution could be entered more than once, but this could not be reconciled with the amount actually in bank account(s). Also it is clear that $1 million was not a small error relative to the amount she thought she had, without it, she has very little if any relative to her debt. I'm not an accountant, but one would think the actual amount in the bank would be on a monthly report
The details provided later in the article show how glaring the problems were and that they still don't seem to know the actual numbers. The numbers put out on July 14th show debts higher than cash on hand, but the next day cash on hand was revised upward.
Not knowing anything about her, I see why she had to drop out. She likely doesn't have the money to continue and many might think that her administrative skills are not very good and that is a key part of being a governor.
