Steve Wozniak attacks Steve Jobs biopic
Source: Guardian
The Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has issued a stinging criticism of the new biopic of his fellow computing pioneer, the late Steve Jobs, after a clip from the film was released on the internet before its premiere at the Sundance film festival.
The clip shows actors Ashton Kutcher (as Jobs) and Josh Gad (as Wozniak) discussing the merits of the computer operating system Wozniak has just developed. Jobs is seen trying to inspire a sceptical Wozniak as to the potential future impact of home computers, before the Wozniak character shouts: "Nobody wants to buy a computer. Nobody!"
However, Wozniak, 62, in a series of messages posted on the Gizmodo website where the clip first played, said the portrayal was "not close". "We never had such interaction," he wrote. Denying the accuracy of the scene he also stated: "I'm not even sure what it's getting at ... personalities are very wrong."
Wozniak, who is known in the tech community as "Woz", also implied that far from Jobs being the inspirational leader, at that time it was far more probable that Jobs was learning from Wozniak about the possibilities of personal computing.
His idea was to make a $20 PC board and sell it for $40 to help people at the club build the computer I'd given away. He always saw a way to make a quick buck off my designs."

(5,023 posts)Appears Hollywood is still making a quick buck of his designs.
That's how the tech industry has worked from the beginning... people profiting from and taking credit for the accomplishments of the real techies who actually did the work. I understand the two must work in harmony, but it seems to be unevenly balanced toward the guy who likes to stand on a stage.

(3,270 posts)"The film is not a documentary, nor is it meant to be a blow by blow, word for word account of all conversations and events. The filmmakers have tremendous admiration and respect for Wozniak and all those that are portrayed in the film, and did extensive research in an effort to make an entertaining accurate film that captures the essence and story of Steve Jobs and those that built Apple with him."

Woz is too nice for his own good, he tends to never opine about these types of things regarding Apple.

(15,740 posts)back in the early 80's Woz had a sign on the road beside his house in the Santa Cruz mountains that said "Woz's Place".
He always struck me as an affable nice guy. One of his first post-Apple designs was a programmable IR remote, years before they became so pervasive. (I still have one stuffed away somewhere.)

(16,191 posts)On one hand, he has spoken up quietly a few times about the fact that he's not exactly an Apple fanboy. He's not thrilled with the way the company is run, and readily admits to using both Apple and Android mobile devices...stating more than once that each platform is superior to the other in different ways. He's also an advocate of ending the war between Android and iOS, and making the platforms inter-operable (he differed sharply from Jobs on that point...Jobs wanted an Apple "victory" so that iOS would remain the dominant platform, while Woz has long been an advocate of diversity in technology, open platforms, and global interoperability).
On the other hand, Woz created Apple, and has always been hesitant to oppose it strongly because it IS still his creation (he was once quoted as saying something along the lines of Apple being like a "poorly behaved adult child...you may be disappointed in their choices and the way they are living their life, but you never stop caring about them" . He's also still a stockholder and derives income from Apple, and doesn't want to undermine it (Woz notably didn't become nearly as rich as Jobs, because Woz famously gave much of his original ownership stake away to friends, family, and early employees, so where Jobs was worth about $30 billion when he died, Woz's wealth is "only" in the millions).
Still, Woz has a reputation for speaking the truth, no matter the fallout. If he's worried about blowback, he's more apt to say nothing at all, than to say something to placate the press. If he says that the script is inaccurate, I tend to believe him.

(11,093 posts)Steve Jobs net worth is also derived from Pixar, which hs been no small success, and Woz stepped away from Apple early on after his plane crash, whereas Jobs went on to NeXT and then Pixar and then Apple (again).
Woz has dumped his money into various ventures of various return and has been pretty charitable; Jobs didn't give a dime away.

Got nuthin against Wozniak. Jobs wasn't exactly perfect, but the pics say it all as to his business acumen.

(13,485 posts)Sorry but money is not the point... at least not to me. And the graph is as indicative of a financial climate that needed advertising strength and a lot of empty hope. With or without Jobs, it could very well have done the same. Nothing against Jobs but he was not an innovator, he was a product pusher (could have been corn flakes) and a rather unethical businessman.
Hmmm.... maybe I do have something against Jobs.

(32,723 posts)I portrayed Steve Jobs and Bill Gates as the con men, egomaniacs and crooks that they were.
It also showed how monumentally STUPID the executive class was,...and still is.
The scene where the best and brightest at Xerox went before the board with their new invention was very telling.
The old guy sitting there all self important saying, "You expect a company like Xerox to get behind something called a 'mouse'?"
Another was where an employee had a contract on his ideas being the property of the company he was working for showing of the first PC in a plywood cabinet and the guy saying, "This is supposed to be for average people? What would average people want with a computer?"
Keep in mind, these are the wonderful "Job Creators" the Republicans love.
They're fucking idiots who can't see beyond the next quarter's balance sheets.

(40,416 posts)They only know about marketing. Their history is a shambles. The way they portray historic figures is horrible. Events are trivialized by insipid, idiotic subplots which are only designed to sell, not to tell.
Plus, creativity is gone. How many remakes/sequels do we need? Hollywood milks the last penny from any creative franchise, destroying it in the process.
I could cite so many examples, but we all know them.
I love cinema, but Hollywood utterly sucks.
