Thousands rally in Washington for gun control

Source: USA Today/AP

Eliza Collins, USA TODAY3:42p.m. EST January 26, 2013

About 100 residents of Newtown, Conn., took part in the march, which was organized in response to the December shooting there that killed 20 first-graders and six teachers.

WASHINGTON — In the wake of several recent mass shootings, thousands of people gathered in front of the Capitol Saturday for a silent march urging Congress to act on legislation to control guns. Despite chilly temperatures and snow-covered ground, supporters came from around the country came to make their statement.

Deborah Hill, a proofreader from Landover, Md., said she came straight from at 8 a.m. "because of the deep sadness over the many, many lives lost from gun violence." She said she was hoping to honor a 23-year-old neighbor who was murdered in October.

"You don't come out here on a day like this for nothing," Hill said.

More than 1,000 white posters with the names of victims of gun violence were passed out to participants, but many also brought their own. "Gun Control Now" and "Stop NRA" were some of the most popular, but homemade signs were also in abundance.

It would be nice to think they had the names of the Democratic Senators who can't muster the guts to vote right on this.
Connecticut parents in Washington today should be knocking their doors down.

To those Dems in a red state who think they have to vote like a Repug to retain their seats: what good are you? Tell your constituents there's a big difference between a hunting rifle and an assault weapon with a 100-round magazine. Give them information and let them know why you support the bans on assault weapons, large magazines, etc. Maybe they'll agree if they're educated.

One of these beautiful kids gave us a ribbon in memory of the children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. I will cherish that act of love and hope, forever.
