Source: Clickondetroit

DETROIT -

Michigan State Police said two people are dead, 20 people are hurt and dozens of cars crushed in a massive crash that has closed a portion of I-75 in Detroit.

MSP Lt. Michael Shaw said white-out weather conditions are being blamed for the crash. He said cars started to crash into each other at Dearborn Street, but drivers were unable to see the wrecks ahead of them and ended up slamming into each other.

I had to commute in to Detroit from Dearborn for a job and the drive was a highspeed video game of blind sweeping curves and on and off ramps. You can't see very far ahead on a clear day.

DON'T DRIVE ANYWHERE IN A WHITEOUT! I don't know what is happening...Are we being lulled to sleep with the climate change? Do those that live in the north around the lakes not remember what a whiteout is anymore? NOTHING is worth the consequences of going out in a car in a whiteout. Don't do it. Be smart....stay alive! Stay put until it passes.

My gun sarcasm aside, this is a sad accident.

8. I was caught in one of those whiteouts at 9:20 this AM about 2 miles west of this accident.

Light snow was blowing in for a few minutes, then the whiteout. I couldn't see the front of my car's hood. I pulled over to the curb and waited it out. It only lasted about a minute or so. I was lucky to be on a road (Outer Drive) with a 35mph limit and very light traffic.

Scary white knuckles stuff!

but in general, people in this area drive way too fast. I'm not from Detroit originally and when I moved here 20 years ago I was flabbergasted at how fast everyone drove and how they would weave in and out of traffic going 80-90 mph. If the speed limit is 70 and you are going 75, well, people get on your tail like you're going 40 or something. There are many stretches of highway in the Detroit metro area that are like this. I-696 is just awful.

I have never been able to understand the mentality of Detroit metro drivers. It's like they want to prove something about how living in the Motor City area makes you a better driver.

This is just a terrible accident and any one of us could end up in something like this even in good weather. We need to slow down, keep a good distance (yeah, like that's going to happen here) especially in bad weather.

...the potholes are outrageous! I lost right front and rear tires and alloy wheels, simultaneously, to a Detroit pothole. Over $1,000 to replace.

Some of them are large enough to swallow a whole car!

But don't you worry, The Nerd is going to fix all of our roads

12. That was the fastest freezing of a road I have ever seen.

We had temperatures in the 60's yesterday, rained heavily, then cold moved in with high winds and snow.

I could not see ice but a kick of my brake and the ABS clicked away. (Automatic Braking System)

This was gray ice on the gray road.

The snowy white out was not bad. I did 96 into downtown, then out 94 to Telegraph and back.

I'd hate to have been on that huge miles long I-75 bridge today in freezing conditions after a rain in a blinding snow. That road scares me on bright clear dry days.
