42 Wash. lawmakers ask DEA to reclassify marijuana
OLYMPIA, Wash.
More than three dozen Washington state lawmakers sent a letter to the federal government on Monday, asking for marijuana to be reclassified as a drug that can be prescribed by doctors and filled by pharmacists.
Reclassifying marijuana as a Schedule II drug would allow it to be prescribed by doctors and handled by pharmacists. Marijuana is currently classified a Schedule 1 drug, meaning it's not accepted for medical treatment and can't be prescribed, administered or dispensed.
In the letter to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the lawmakers said they supported Gov. Chris Gregoire's previous request on the issue. Seven Republican lawmakers were among the 42 in both the House and the Senate who signed the letter.
In addition to the letter, Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-Seattle, introduced Senate Joint Memorial 8017 making the same request to reclassify medical marijuana. The joint memorial was scheduled for a hearing in the Health & Long Term Care Committee on Thursday.http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2017375963_apwamedicalmarijuana.html

(47,675 posts)I take Schedule II and IV drugs (legally) and they're far more frightening than even the best pot I ever smoked:
Well, except that one time that someone filled the bong with whiskey and I drained a party bowl, but that was long ago and in Illinois where they think coughing after a small amount of smoke means you're stoned.

(6,241 posts)There is too much money to be made by the people that supply weapons and gear to law enforcement, and the for-profit prison system. That's fees for having inmates behind bars, and the nearly slave labor that the inmates provide. There is no way they are going to give that up. If there was a way they could make money off having it legal, they would do that.

It surely does less damage than either of those substances.
