Judge: Corey has authority to prosecute Shellie Zimmerman

SANFORD Shellie Zimmerman appeared in court this afternoon and sat silently as a judge refused to dismiss the perjury charge against her.
She's the wife of George Zimmerman, the Neighborhood Watch volunteer who's accused of murdering Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black 17-year-old, in Sanford one year ago.
According to prosecutors, Shellie Zimmerman lied at her husband's April 20 bond hearing when she testified that the couple had no money.
In truth, they were awash in cash, according to the couple's financial records. More than $130,000 had come flooding in in the previous two weeks from online donors, contributing to George Zimmerman's defense.

(7,362 posts)So like if get busted for smoking a joint in the house, and there happens to be a gun in the house, I should have a mandatory minimum placed on me?

(12,586 posts)The official Neighborhood Watch organization has stated they have no record of Zimmerman as a member. Nor does the organization permit its members to carry guns. According to the manual:
REMEMBER:
Community members only serve as the extra eyes and ears of law enforcement. They
should report their observations of suspicious activities to law enforcement; however, citizens
should never try to take action on those observations. Trained law enforcement should be
the only ones ever to take action based on observations of suspicious activities.
It's bad reporting to keep referring to Zimmerman as a "Neighborhood Watch Captain" or even as a "Neighborhood Watch volunteer." The proper phrasing should be "alleged Neighborhood Watch volunteer" or "self-described neighborhood watch volunteer."
Of course, there's always my favorite term to use to describe a person who cruises around with a gun looking for "wrong-doers": vigilante.

Think they regret that decision?

(79 posts)...and not, I assure you, out of ANY desire to defend Mr. Zimmerman ...
Included in the large pdf. cache of documents linked below (on page 155) is a copy of a neighborhood newsletter ("Retreat Reflections" from February of 2012 which, under the title "Neighborhood Watch," explains:
"If you've been the victim of a crime ... after calling the police, please contact our Captain, George Zimmerman ..."
And in the next paragraph:
"The Neighborhood Watch is looking for additional members ..."
It appears that thether or not Zimmerman was affiliated with any other, officially-recognized "Neighborhood Watch" program, he was, in fact, attached to one based in his housing development.
