WASHINGTON -- In an effort to reduce partisan tensions between the White House and Capitol Hill, President Barack Obama sat down Wednesday night to break bread with a dozen Senate Republicans, including Sen. Mike Johanns of Nebraska.
"I am hoping this marks the beginning of a renewed commitment by the president to work together with those of us in congress on both sides of the aisle," Johanns said Thursday during his weekly conference call with reporters. "We have a great opportunity now, I believe, for a large agreement that addresses tough issues like strengthening and securing Social Security and Medicare now and in the future and dealing with our national debt, which is just way too large."
Obama also plans to meet with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill during a luncheon next week.
Johanns said the dinner marked a good first step, as the president listened to their ideas for more than an hour, but Johanns also stressed the need to move beyond talking and get to a final legislative product.
